Device for allocating a payment authorization request to a payment processor
First Claim
1. A point of sale (POS) device, comprising:
- a processor; and
a non-transitory computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon that, in response to execution by the processor, cause the POS device to perform operations comprising;
receiving a first account identifier associated with a first account issued by a first account issuer;
acquiring an allocation rule associated with the first account identifier;
querying a payment system directory to locate a candidate payment system in accordance with the allocation rule, wherein the candidate payment system is associated with a first payment processor and is configured to process at least a first portion of a transaction in response to receiving payment information related to the transaction;
transmitting a first payment authorization request related to the first portion of the transaction to the candidate payment system;
based upon the allocation rule, forming a second payment authorization request that corresponds to a second payment processor and that specifies a second account identifier associated with a second account issued by a second account issuer that is different from the first account issuer; and
receiving a payment authorization from the candidate payment system.

Abstract
A point of sale (POS) device may be configured to locate a payment system and transmit a payment authorization request from a remote location to a payment system, either directly, or via a payment system directory and/or a SSL Gateway. The invention also includes inserting third party account information into an encrypted portion of the payment request, so the payment request appears as a normal request to the issuing bank, but the third party account information may be used by the third party to bill the customer. The payment system directory is further configured to determine one or more payment processors to direct a payment authorization request, such that a single transaction may me allocated among multiple payment processors for authorization. Moreover, the payment system directory is able to format alternative payment methods into a format that is able to be processed over existing payment networks.

-
receiving, by a computer system comprising a processor and an electronic storage device, a first account identifier associated with a first account issued by a first account issuer; based on an allocation rule associated with the first account identifier, the computer system querying a payment system directory to obtain contact information for a first candidate payment system, wherein the first candidate payment system is associated with a first payment processor and is configured to process at least a first portion of a transaction in response to receiving payment information related to the transaction; the computer system transmitting a first payment authorization request related to the first portion of the transaction to the first candidate payment system; and the computer system transmitting a second payment authorization request related to a second portion of the transaction to a second candidate payment system that is associated with a second payment processor, wherein the second payment authorization request includes a second account identifier associated with a second account issued by a second account issuer that is different from the first account issuer. - View Dependent Claims (9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14)
