Abstract

A light emitting diode (LED) lighting fixture for achieving a desired illumination pattern includes a support plate and a plurality of panels Connected to the support plate. Each panel has an array of LEDs mounted to a planar surface thereof, and each of the panels is rotatable in at least two dimensions.

Claims

1. A light-emitting diode (LED) lighting fixture, comprising:

a support plate having a first surface and a second surface;

a panel connected to the first surface of the support plate, the panel having a planar surface and having at least one bar attached to and extending from the planar surface with an LED strip mounted to the at least one bar; and

the panel positioned at an angle relative to the support plate to create a desired illumination pattern.

2. The fixture of claim 1, further comprising a driver disposed on the second surface of the support plate.

3. The fixture of claim 1, wherein the panel is orientable in two different planes to create the desired illumination pattern.

4. The fixture of claim 3, wherein the panel is movable to a vertical angle to determine a length of the illumination pattern and movable to a lateral angle to determine a width of the illumination pattern.

5. The fixture of claim 1, wherein the at least one bar comprises a plurality of bars attached to and extending from the planar surface of the panel with each bar having an LED strip mounted thereto.

6. The fixture of claim 5, wherein one or more LEDs on the plurality of LED strips is fitted with a secondary optic thereon.

7. The fixture of claim 1, wherein one or more LEDs on the LED strip is fitted with a secondary optic thereon.

8. The fixture of claim 1, further comprising:

a plurality of panels connected to the first surface of the support plate, each panel of the plurality of panels having a planar surface and at least one bar attached to and extending from the planar surface with an LED strip mounted to the at least one bar; and

at least one of the panels of the plurality of panels positioned at an angle relative to the support plate to create a desired illumination pattern.

9. The fixture of claim 8, wherein the panels with LED strips thereon are configured to provide a total light output of between about 6,000 and about 9,000 lumens.

10. The fixture of claim 8, wherein the panels with LED strips thereon are configured to provide a light output of at least about 8,000 lumens in the desired direction.

11. The fixture of claim 8, wherein the panels with LED arrays thereon are configured to provide a light output of at least about 6,000 lumens in the desired direction.

12. The fixture of claim 8, wherein one or more LEDs on the LED strip is fitted with a secondary optic thereon.

The fixture of claim 8, wherein the at least one panel positioned at an angle relative to the support plate comprises at least one of the plurality of panels being fixable at a first angle from a vertical plane bisecting the support plate and at a second angle from a horizontal plane bisecting the support plate to create the desired illumination pattern.

14. The fixture of claim 13, wherein the first and second angles of each respective panel that is angled from the vertical plane or horizontal plane bisecting the support plate are selected for the fixture to provide at least about 90% of a total light output in a desired direction.

15. The fixture of claim 8, wherein the first and second angles of each respective panel that is angled from the vertical plane or horizontal plane bisecting the support plate are selected to produce any of IESNA-specified Type I, Type II, Type III and Type IV roadway illumination patterns.

16. The fixture of claim 8, wherein the plurality of panels comprise front panels and rear panels, the front and rear panels being individually adjustable to create the desired illumination pattern.

17. The fixture of claim 16, wherein the one or more LEDs on the LED strips on the front panels are fitted with a secondary optic and the LEDs on the LED strips on the rear panels have no optics.

18. The fixture of claim 17, wherein

the front panels with the one or more LEDs on the LED strips fitted with the secondary optic are oriented to satisfy an IESNA specification for width and length of the desired illumination pattern, and

the LEDs on the LED strips on the rear panels fill in the illumination pattern towards the center of the pattern.

19. The fixture of claim 18, wherein each of the front and rear panels are set at a first angle along a vertical plane bisecting the support plate and a second angle along a lateral plane extending from a side of the support plate to a front of the support plate to produce any of IESNA-specified Type I, Type II, Type III and Type IV roadway illumination patterns.

20. A light-emitting diode (LED) lighting fixture, comprising:

a support plate having a first surface and a second surface;

a panel connected to the first surface of the support plate, the panel having a first surface and a second surface, the first surface of the panel comprising a planar surface and having at least one LED mounted to and extending from the planar surface of the panel and heat fins extending from the second surface of the panel; and

the panel positioned at an angle relative to the support plate to create a desired illumination pattern.

21. The fixture of claim 20, further comprising a driver disposed on the second surface of the support plate.

22. The fixture of claim 20, wherein the panel is orientable in two different planes to create the desired illumination pattern.

23. The fixture of claim 20, wherein the heat sink forms an integral portion of the panel so that the heat fins form a portion of the second surface of the panel.

24. The fixture of claim 20, wherein the at least one LED comprises an array of LEDs.

25. The fixture of claim 24, wherein one or more LEDs of the array of LEDs is fitted with a secondary optic thereon.

26. The fixture of claim 24, wherein each array of LEDs on the panel comprises a plurality of strips of LEDs.

27. The fixture of claim 26, wherein one or more LEDs on at least one of the LED strips is fitted with a secondary optic thereon.

28. The fixture of claim 20, further comprising:

a plurality of panels connected to the first surface of the support plate, each panel of the plurality of panels having a first surface and a second surface, the first surface of each panel comprising a planar surface and having at least one LED mounted to and extending from the planar surface of the panel and heat fins extending from the second surface of each panel; and

at least one of the panels positioned at an angle relative to the support plate to create a desired illumination pattern.

The fixture of claim 28, wherein the at least one panel positioned at an angle relative to the support plate is orientable in two different planes to create the desired illumination pattern and is movable to a vertical angle to determine a length of the illumination pattern and movable to a lateral angle to determine a width of the illumination pattern.

30. The fixture of claim 28, wherein at least one of the panels is fixable at a first angle from a vertical plane bisecting the support plate and at a second angle from a horizontal plane bisecting the support plate to create the desired illumination pattern.

31. The fixture of claim 30, wherein the first and second angles of each respective panel that is angled from the vertical plane or horizontal plane bisecting the support plate are selected for the fixture to provide at least about 90% of a total light output in a desired direction.

32. The fixture of claim 30, wherein the first and second angles of each respective panel that is angled from the vertical plane or horizontal plane bisecting the support plate are selected to produce any of IESNA-specified Type I, Type II, Type III and Type IV roadway illumination patterns.

33. The fixture of claim 28, wherein the plurality of panels comprise front panels and rear panels, the front and rear panels being individually adjustable to create the desired illumination pattern.

34. The fixture of claim 33, wherein the at least one LED on the front panels is fitted with a secondary optic and the at least one LED on the rear panels has no optics.

35. The fixture of claim 34, wherein

the front panels with the at least one LED fitted with the secondary optic is oriented to satisfy an IESNA specification for width and length of the desired illumination pattern, and

the at least one LED on the rear panels fills in the illumination pattern towards the center of the pattern.

36. The fixture of claim 33, wherein each of the front and rear panels are set at a first angle along a vertical plane bisecting the support plate and a second angle along a lateral plane extending from a side of the support plate to a front of the support plate to produce any of IESNA-specified Type I, Type II, Type III and Type IV roadway illumination patterns.

37. A light-emitting diode (LED) lighting fixture, comprising:

a support plate having a first surface and a second surface;

a support arm having a first end and second end, the support arm connected at the first end to the first surface of the support plate;

a panel connected to the second end of the support arm, the panel having a planar surface and having at least one LED mounted to and extending from the planar surface; and

the panel positioned at an angle relative to the support plate to create a desired illumination pattern.

38. The fixture of claim 37, further comprising a driver disposed on the second surface of the support plate.

39. The fixture of claim 37, wherein a connection between the second end of the support arm and the panel permits the angle relative to the support plate to be variable.

40. The fixture of claim 39, wherein the support arm comprises a swivel assembly.

41. The fixture of claim 39, wherein the panel is orientable in two different planes to create the desired illumination pattern.

42. The fixture of claim 37, wherein the at least one LED comprises an array of LEDs.

43. The fixture of claim 42, wherein one or more LEDs of the array of LEDs is fitted with a secondary optic thereon.

44. The fixture of claim 42, wherein each array of LEDs on the panel comprises a plurality of strips of LEDs.

45. The fixture of claim 42, wherein the panels with LED arrays thereon are configured to provide a total light output of between about 6,000 and about 9,000 lumens.

46. The fixture of claim 42, wherein the panels with LED arrays thereon are configured to provide a light output of at least about 8,000 lumens in a desired direction.

47. The fixture of claim 42, wherein the panels with LED arrays thereon are configured to provide a light output of at least about 6,000 lumens in a desired direction.

48. The fixture of claim 37, further comprising:

a plurality of support arms, each support arm of the plurality of support arms having a first end and second end and being connected at the first end to the first surface of the support plate;

a plurality of panels, each panel of the plurality of panels being connected to the second end of a corresponding support arm of the plurality of support arms and each panel of the plurality of panels having a planar surface and having at least one LED mounted to and extending from the planar surface; and

at least one panel of the plurality of panels positioned at an angle relative to the support plate to create a desired illumination pattern.

49. The fixture of claim 48, wherein the at least one panel positioned at an angle relative to the support plate is orientable in two different planes to create the desired illumination pattern and is movable to a vertical angle to determine length of the illumination pattern and movable to a lateral angle to determine width of the illumination pattern.

50. The fixture of claim 48, wherein at least one of the panels is fixable at a first angle from a vertical plane bisecting the support plate and at a second angle from a horizontal plane bisecting the support plate to create the desired illumination pattern.

51. The fixture of claim 50, wherein the first and second angles of each respective panel that is angled from the vertical plane or horizontal plane bisecting the support plate are selected for the fixture to provide at least about 90% of a total light output in a desired direction.

52. The fixture of claim 50, wherein the first and second angles of each respective panel that is angled from the vertical plane or horizontal plane bisecting the support plate are selected to produce any of IESNA-specified Type I, Type II, Type III and Type IV roadway illumination patterns.

53. The fixture of claim 48, wherein the plurality of panels comprise front panels and rear panels, the front and rear panels being individually adjustable to create the desired illumination pattern.

54. The fixture of claim 53, wherein the at least one LED on the front panels is fitted with a secondary optic and the at least one LED on the rear panels has no optics.

55. The fixture of claim 54, wherein

the front panels with the at least one LED fitted with the secondary optic are oriented to satisfy an IESNA specification for width and length of the desired illumination pattern, and

the at least one LED on the rear panels fill in the illumination pattern towards the center of the pattern.

56. The fixture of claim 53, wherein each of the front and rear panels are set at a first angle along a vertical plane bisecting the support plate and a second angle along a lateral plane extending from a side of the support plate to a front of the support plate to produce any of IESNA-specified Type I, Type II, Type III and Type IV roadway illumination patterns.
