Abstract

A programmer allows a clinician to identify combinations of electrodes from within an electrode set implanted in a patient that enable delivery of desirable neurostimulation therapy by an implantable medical device. The programmer executes an electrode combination search algorithm to select combinations of electrodes to test in a non-random order. According to algorithms consistent with the invention, the programmer may first identify a position of a first cathode for subsequent combinations, and then select electrodes from the set to test with the first cathode as anodes or additional cathodes based on the proximity of the electrodes to the first cathode. The programmer may store information for each combination tested, and the information may facilitate the identification of desirable electrode combinations by the clinician. The clinician may create neurostimulation therapy programs that include identified desirable program combinations.

Claims

1. A method for testing a plurality of combinations of electrodes from a set of electrodes implanted within a patient, wherein testing each of the plurality of electrode combinations comprises delivering neurostimulation therapy from a medical device to a patient via the electrode combination, the method comprising:

identifying an initial position within the set of electrodes;

selecting different ones of the electrodes of the set as a first electrode in an order based on decreasing proximity of the electrodes to the initial position; and

for each of the selected first electrodes, testing neurostimulation therapy provided by a subset of the plurality of the electrode combinations, wherein each of the electrode combinations of the subset includes the respective first electrode and one or more additional electrodes from the set of electrodes.

The method of claim 1, wherein testing the subset of the plurality of the electrode combinations that include the respective first electrode and one or more additional electrodes from the set of electrodes comprises testing the subset of the plurality of electrode combinations in an order of decreasing proximity of the additional electrodes to the respective first electrode.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the initial position comprises a longitudinally central position within the electrode set.

The method of claim 1, wherein testing the subset of the plurality of the electrode combinations that include the respective first electrode and one or more additional electrodes from the set of electrodes comprises testing at least one guarded cathode or guarded anode combination that includes the respective first electrode.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the first electrode comprises a first cathode.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the first electrode comprises a first anode.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein, for each of the tested electrode combinations, an amplitude of the neurostimulation delivered via the electrode combination is user-controlled.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein, for each of the tested electrode combinations, an amplitude of the neurostimulation delivered via the electrode combination is ramped up.

9. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions that cause a processor to control the testing of a plurality of combinations of electrodes from a set of electrodes implanted within a patient, wherein the testing of each of the plurality of electrode combinations comprises delivery of neurostimulation therapy from a medical device to a patient via the electrode combination, the medium further comprising instructions that cause the processor to:

identify an initial position within the set of electrodes;

select different ones of the electrodes of the set as a first electrode in an order based on decreasing proximity of the electrodes to the initial position; and

for each of the selected first electrodes, control the testing of neurostimulation therapy provided by a subset of the plurality of the electrode combinations, wherein each of the electrode combinations of the subset includes the respective first electrode and one or more additional electrodes from the set of electrodes.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9, wherein the instructions that cause the processor to control the testing of the subset of the plurality of the electrode combinations that include the first electrode and one or more additional electrodes from the set of electrodes comprise instructions that cause the processor to control the testing of the subset of the plurality of electrode combinations in an order of decreasing proximity of the additional electrodes to the respective first electrode.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9, wherein the instructions that cause the processor to control the testing of the subset of the plurality of the electrode combinations that include the respective first electrode and one or more additional electrodes from the set of electrodes comprise instructions that cause the processor to control the testing of at least one guarded cathode or guarded anode combination that includes the respective first electrode.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9, wherein the instructions cause the processor to control an amplitude of the neurostimulation delivered via each of the electrode combinations based on user input.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9, further comprising instructions that cause the processor to, for each of the tested electrode combinations, ramp up an amplitude of the neurostimulation delivered via the electrode combination.

14. A device comprising a processor configured to control the testing of a plurality of combinations of electrodes from a set of electrodes implanted within a patient, wherein the testing of each of the plurality of electrode combinations comprises delivery of neurostimulation therapy from a medical device to a patient via the electrode combination, wherein the processor is further configured to:

identify an initial position within the set of electrodes;

select different ones of the electrodes of the set as a first electrode in an order based on decreasing proximity of the electrodes to the initial position; and

for each of the selected first electrodes, control the testing of neurostimulation therapy provided by a subset of the plurality of the electrode combinations, wherein each of the electrode combinations of the subset includes the respective first electrode and one or more additional electrodes from the set of electrodes.

15. The device of claim 14, wherein the processor is configured to control the testing of the subset of the plurality of electrode combinations in an order of decreasing proximity of the additional electrodes to the respective first electrode.

16. The device of claim 14, wherein the processor is configured to control the testing of at least one guarded cathode or guarded anode combination that includes the respective first electrode.

17. The device of claim 14, wherein the processor is configured to control an amplitude of the neurostimulation delivered via each of the electrode combinations based on user input.

18. The device of claim 14, wherein the processor is configured to, for each of the tested electrode combinations, ramp up an amplitude of the neurostimulation delivered via the electrode combination.

19. The device of claim 14, wherein the medical device comprises an implantable medical device, and wherein the device comprises an external device external to the patient and configured to communicate with the implantable medical device.

20. The device of claim 14, wherein the initial position comprises a longitudinally central position within the electrode set.
