Abstract

A system and method may generate a report to help decide among a plurality of treatment options for a medical condition. The system and method receive patient information and to generate a plurality of potential treatment options for the medical condition. The system and method also receive the patient'"'"'s preference(s) for potential treatment outcomes of the treatment options, used to produce a preference value. The system and method also analyze indexed study data relating to the plurality of treatment options to produce based on the analysis a study score for each of the treatment options. For each treatment option, the system and method produce a treatment score based on at least the preference value and the study score, thus permitting generation of a report listing the treatment options and a) the treatment scores or b) the information derived from the treatment scores.

Claims

1. A method, for use with at least one processor on at least one computer in a computer system, of recommending a treatment among a plurality of treatment options for a given treatable medical condition of a patient, the method comprising:

receiving patient information related to the patient and the medical condition;

searching a database with indexed scientific studies, each scientific study evaluating an effect of a different treatment option on different trial subjects who have the given medical condition;

assigning a distinct study value to each of the scientific studies, each distinct study value corresponding to a grading of evidence in the scientific study;

determining applicability of the scientific studies to the patient using the patient information to produce a plurality of applicability values, each applicability value based on matching between patient characteristics and characteristics of the trial subjects tested in a distinct scientific study from the indexed scientific studies;

generating a distinct treatment score for each distinct treatment option using at least the study values for scientific studies involving the distinct treatment option and the applicability values for those scientific studies; and

generating a report listing the treatment options and a) the treatment scores or b) information derived from the treatment scores.

2. The method as defined by claim 1, further comprising:

receiving preference information indicative of the patient'"'"'s preference for potential treatment outcomes of the treatment options; and

ranking the plurality of treatment options using the preference information.

3. The method as defined by claim 1 wherein the information derived from the treatment scores comprises a ranking of the treatment options as a function of the treatment scores.

4. The method as defined by claim 3, further comprising selecting a recommended treatment option, wherein the selected recommended treatment option is the treatment having a score with a specific attribute.

5. The method as defined by claim 3,

wherein using at least the study values and the applicability values to generate a distinct treatment score for each distinct treatment option further comprises using patient preference information to generate the distinct treatment score for each distinct treatment option, and

wherein the method further comprises:

choosing two treatment options with the highest treatment scores; and

determining if a difference between treatment scores of the two treatment options falls below a pre-defined threshold, and if so, recalculating the treatment scores of the two treatment options without using patient preference information.

6. The method as defined by claim 1 further comprising:

receiving, at least in part in a computer process, treatment recommendations from a plurality of experts, the treatment recommendations relating to the plurality of treatment options;

converting, at least in part in a computer process, the treatment recommendations into an expert value for each treatment option; and

for each treatment option, determining the treatment score as a function of the expert value.

7. The method as defined by claim 6, further comprising applying an expert weight to the expert value.

The method as defined by claim 7, wherein the expert weight is calculated using at least one of a ranking of the expert'"'"'s academic institution, a ranking of the expert'"'"'s employing institution, the expert'"'"'s previous success in recommending, the expert'"'"'s degree of experience, and the relatedness of the expert'"'"'s qualifications or experiences to treating or working or processing conditions of the patient.

9. The method as defined by claim 6, further comprising formulating a medical question, the question comprising patient information, information about the medical condition, and a list of the potential treatment options.

10. The method as defined by claim 9, further comprising forwarding the question to the experts.

11. The method as defined by claim 1, further comprising storing, in an outcome database, treatment decisions together with medical outcomes of the treatments and reporting to the patient information derived from the outcome database related to past outcomes.

12. The method as defined by claim 11, further comprising determining the treatment scores as a function of the success rate in the outcome database.

13. The method as defined by claim 1, wherein the indexed study data is derived at least in part from published scientific studies evaluating the treatment options in a studied population.

14. The method as defined by claim 1, wherein each study value also corresponds to an extent of effectiveness demonstrated by the treatment option in the scientific study.

15. The method as defined by claim 1 further comprising creating the database with the indexed scientific studies.

16. The method as defined by claim 1, wherein scientific studies include published scientific studies, unpublished scientific studies, conference presentations, pharmaceutical data, medical literature, or any combination thereof.

17. A computer program product including a non-transitory computer-readable medium having computer code thereon for recommending a treatment among a plurality of treatment options for a given treatable medical condition of a patient, the computer code comprising:

computer code for receiving patient information related to the patient and the medical condition;

computer code for accessing, a database with a plurality of scientific studies, each scientific study evaluating an effect of a different treatment option on different trial subjects who have the given medical condition;

computer code for assigning a distinct study value to each of the plurality of scientific studies, each distinct study value corresponding to a grading of evidence in the scientific study;

computer code for determining applicability of the scientific studies to the patient using the patient information to produce a plurality of applicability values, each applicability value based on matching between patient characteristics and characteristics of the trial subjects tested in the scientific study;

computer code for using at least the study values and the applicability values to generate a distinct treatment score for each distinct treatment option; and

computer code for generating a report listing the treatment options and the a) treatment scores or b) information derived from the treatment scores.

18. A computer program product as defined by claim 17, further comprising:

computer code for receiving preference information indicative of the patient'"'"'s preference for potential treatment outcomes of the treatment options; and

computer code for ranking the plurality of treatment options using the preference information.

19. A computer program product as defined by claim 17, wherein the information derived from the treatment scores comprises a ranking of the treatment options as a function of the treatment scores.

20. A computer program product as defined by claim 19 further comprising computer code for selecting a recommended treatment option having a score with a specific attribute.

21. A computer program product as defined by claim 19,

wherein computer code for using at least the study values and the applicability values to generate the distinct treatment score for each distinct treatment option further comprises computer code for using patient preference information to generate the distinct treatment score for each distinct treatment option, and

wherein the computer program product further comprises:

computer code for choosing two given treatment options; and

computer code for determining if a difference between treatment scores of the two given treatment options falls below a pre-defined threshold, and if so, recalculating the treatment scores of the two given treatment options without using patient preference information.

22. A computer program product as defined by claim 17, further comprising:

computer code for receiving treatment recommendations from a plurality of experts, the treatment recommendations relating to the plurality of treatment options;

computer code for converting the treatment recommendations into an expert value for each treatment option; and

computer code for determining, for each treatment option, the treatment score as a function of the expert value.

23. A computer program product as defined by claim 22, further comprising computer code for applying an expert weight to the expert value.

A computer program product as defined by claim 23, wherein the expert weight is calculated using at least one of a ranking of the expert'"'"'s academic institution, a ranking of the expert'"'"'s employing institution, the expert'"'"'s previous success in recommending, the expert'"'"'s degree of experience, and the relatedness of the expert'"'"'s qualifications or experiences to treating or working or processing conditions of the patient.

25. A computer program product as defined by claim 22, further comprising computer code for formulating a medical question, the question comprising patient information, information about the medical condition, and a list of the potential treatment options.

26. A computer program product as defined by claim 25, further comprising computer code for sending the question to the experts.

27. A computer program product as defined by claim 17, further comprising computer code for storing, in an outcome database, treatment decisions by a plurality of patients together with medical outcomes of the treatments and reporting to the patient information derived from the outcome database related to past outcomes.

28. A computer program product as defined by claim 27, further comprising program code for determining the treatment scores as a function of the success rate in the outcome database.

29. A computer program product as defined by claim 17, wherein the study data is indexed and derived at least in part from published scientific studies evaluating the treatment options in a studied population.

30. A computer program product as defined by claim 17, wherein each study value also corresponds to an extent of effectiveness demonstrated by the treatment option in the scientific study.

31. A medical treatment recommendation system for generating a report to help decide among a plurality of treatment options for a patient for a given treatable medical condition comprising:

a receiving module executing on a computer that receives patient information related to the patient and the medical condition;

an access module executing on a computer that accesses and searches a database with a plurality of indexed scientific studies, each scientific study evaluating an effect of a different treatment option on different trial subjects who have the given medical condition;

a study scoring module executing on a computer that assigns a distinct study value to each of the plurality of scientific studies, each distinct study value corresponding to a grading of evidence in the scientific study;

an applicability scoring module executing on a computer that determines applicability of the scientific studies to the patient using the patient information to produce a plurality of applicability values, each applicability value based on matching between patient characteristics and characteristics of the trial subjects tested in the scientific study;

a study value module executing on a computer that uses at least the study values and the applicability values to generate a distinct treatment score for each distinct treatment option; and

a reporting module executing on a computer that generates a report listing the treatment options and a) the treatment scores or b) information derived from the treatment scores.

32. The system as defined by claim 31, further comprising:

a preference receiving module for receiving preference information indicative of the patient'"'"'s preference for potential treatment outcomes of the treatment options; and

a ranking module for ranking the plurality of treatment options using the preference information.

33. The system as defined by claim 31 wherein the information derived from the treatment scores comprises a ranking of the treatment options as a function of the treatment scores.

34. The system as defined by claim 33, further comprising a selection module for selecting a recommended treatment option having a score with a specific attribute.

35. The system as defined by claim 33,

wherein the study value module further uses patient preference information to generate the distinct treatment score for each distinct treatment option;

and

wherein the system further comprises;

a determination module for determining if a difference between treatment scores of two given treatment options falls below a pre-defined threshold, and if so, recalculating the two treatment scores without using patient preference information.

36. The system as defined by claim 31 further comprising:

a receiving module for receiving treatment recommendations from a plurality of experts, the treatment recommendations relating to the plurality of treatment options;

a conversion module for converting the treatment recommendations into an expert value for each treatment option; and

a determining module for determining, for each treatment option, the treatment score as a function of the expert value.

37. The system as defined by claim 36, further comprising a weighting module for applying an expert weight to the expert value.

The system as defined by claim 37, wherein the expert weight is calculated using at least one of a ranking of the expert'"'"'s academic institution, a ranking of the expert'"'"'s employing institution, the expert'"'"'s previous success in recommending, the expert'"'"'s degree of experience, and the relatedness of the expert'"'"'s qualifications or experiences to treating or working or processing conditions of the patient.

39. The system as defined by claim 36, further comprising a question posing module for formulating a medical question, the question comprising patient information, information about the medical condition, and a list of the potential treatment options.

40. The system as defined by claim 39, further comprising a sending module for sending the question to the experts.

41. The system as defined by claim 31, further comprising a storage module for storing, in an outcome database, treatment decisions by a plurality of patients together with medical outcomes of the treatments and reporting to the patient information derived from the outcome database related to past outcomes.

42. The system as defined by claim 41, further comprising a determining module for determining the treatment scores as a function of the success rate in the outcome database.

43. The system as defined by claim 31, wherein the indexed study data is derived at least in part from published scientific studies evaluating the treatment options in a studied population.

44. The system as defined by claim 31, wherein each study value also corresponds to an extent of effectiveness demonstrated by the treatment option in the scientific study.
