1. An analyte monitoring system, comprising:
- an analyte sensor;
a temperature sensor;
a sensor control unit configured to receive one or more signals from the analyte sensor over a plurality of time periods and one or more temperature signals from the temperature sensor; and
a receiver having a display and an input device, the receiver configured to communicate with the sensor control unit;
wherein after the sensor control unit is activated to begin operation, the sensor control unit is configured to communicate the one or more signals received from the analyte sensor over the plurality of time periods in a plurality of data communications and to communicate the one or more signals received from the temperature sensor to the receiver; and
furtherwherein the operation further includes communicating calibration data corresponding to the analyte sensor with at least one of the one or more signals received from the analyte sensor over the plurality of time periods to the receiver in each of the plurality of data communications.

Abstract
An analyte monitor includes a sensor, a sensor control unit, and a display unit. The sensor has, for example, a substrate, a recessed channel formed in the substrate, and conductive material disposed in the recessed channel to form a working electrode. The sensor control unit typically has a housing adapted for placement on skin and is adapted to receive a portion of an electrochemical sensor. The sensor control unit also includes two or more conductive contacts disposed on the housing and configured for coupling to two or more contact pads on the sensor. A transmitter is disposed in the housing and coupled to the plurality of conductive contacts for transmitting data obtained using the sensor. The display unit has a receiver for receiving data transmitted by the transmitter of the sensor control unit and a display coupled to the receiver for displaying an indication of a level of an analyte. The analyte monitor may also be part of a drug delivery system to alter the level of the analyte based on the data obtained using the sensor.

11. A method of providing an analyte monitoring device, comprising:

providing a power source to power a sensor control unit; assembling the sensor control unit to receive one or more signals from an analyte sensor over a plurality of time periods, and to receive one or more temperature signals from a temperature sensor, wherein after the sensor control unit is activated to begin operation, the sensor control unit is configured to communicate the one or more signals received from the analyte sensor over the plurality of time periods in a plurality of data communications, to communicate the one or more signals received from the temperature sensor, and to communicate calibration data corresponding to the analyte sensor with at least one of the one or more signals received from the analyte sensor over the plurality of time periods to a receiver in each of the plurality data communications. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19)
