Abstract

The present invention relates to an improved insulated conductor with a low dielectric constant and reduced materials costs. The conductor (12) extends along a longitudinal axis and an insulation (14, 14<1>) surrounds the conductor (12). At least on channel (16, 16<1>) in the insulation (14, 14<1>) extends generally along the longitudinal axis to form an insulated conductor. Apparatuses and methods of manufacturing the improved insulated conductors are also disclosed.

Claims

1. A method of reducing delay skew between a first twisted wire pair and a second twisted wire pair, the method comprising:

providing first insulators over first conductors used to form the first twisted wire pair, the first insulators including first longitudinal channels;

providing second insulators over second conductors used to form the second twisted wire pair, the second insulators including second longitudinal channels; and

designing the first and second longitudinal channels such that the first longitudinal channels provide the first insulators with a lower dielectric constant than a dielectric constant provided to the second insulators by the second longitudinal channels, wherein the first and second conductors have exterior surfaces that are exposed to gas within at least some of the first and second longitudinal channels;

wherein the first and second insulators include a fluoropolymer material.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the gas within the first and second longitudinal channels includes air.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein at least some of the first and second longitudinal channels are surrounded on all sides by at least some of the first and second insulators.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein inner sides of at least some of the first and second longitudinal channels are bounded by exterior surfaces of at least some of the first and second conductors.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein at least some of the first and second longitudinal channels include open sides that face toward at least some of the first and second conductors.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second insulators have wall thicknesses less than about 0.01 inches.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second insulators have outer diameters less than about 0.042 inches.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second longitudinal channels contain only air.

9. A method of reducing delay skew between a first twisted wire pair and a second twisted wire pair, the method comprising:

providing first insulators over first conductors used to form the first twisted wire pair, the first insulators including first longitudinal channels;

providing second insulators over second conductors used to form the second twisted wire pair, the second insulators including second longitudinal channels; and

designing the first and second longitudinal channels such that the first longitudinal channels provide the first insulators with a lower dielectric constant than a dielectric constant provided to the second insulators by the second longitudinal channels, wherein the first and second insulators have wall thicknesses less than about 0.01 inches.

10. A method of reducing delay skew between a first twisted wire pair and a second twisted wire pair, method comprising:

providing first insulators over first conductors used to form the first twisted wire pair, the first insulators including first longitudinal channels;

providing second insulators over second conductors used to form the second twisted wire pair, the second insulators including second longitudinal channels; and

designing the first and second longitudinal channels such that the first longitudinal channels provide the first insulators with a lower dielectric constant than a dielectric constant provided to the second insulators by the second longitudinal channels, wherein the first and second insulators have outer diameters less than about 0.042 inches.

11. A method of reducing delay skew between a first twisted wire pair and a second twisted wire pair, the method comprising:

providing first insulators over first conductors used to form the first twisted wire pair, the first insulators including first longitudinal channels;

providing second insulators over second conductors used to form the second twisted wire pair, the second insulators including second longitudinal channels; and

designing the first and second longitudinal channels such that the first longitudinal channels provide the first insulators with a lower dielectric constant than a dielectric constant provided to the second insulators by the second longitudinal channels, wherein the first and second conductors have exterior surfaces that are exposed to gas within at least some of the first and second longitudinal channels;

wherein the first and second insulators include a polyolefin material.

12. A method of reducing delay skew between a first twisted wire pair and a second twisted wire pair, the method comprising:

providing first insulators over first conductors used to form the first twisted wire pair, the first insulators including first longitudinal channels;

providing second insulators over second conductors used to form the second twisted wire pair, the second insulators including second longitudinal channels; and

designing the first and second longitudinal channels such that the first longitudinal channels provide the first insulators with a lower dielectric constant than a dielectric constant provided to the second insulators by the second longitudinal channels, wherein the first and second conductors have exterior surfaces that are exposed to gas within at least some of the first and second longitudinal channels;

wherein the first and second insulators have wall thicknesses less than about 0.01 inches.

13. A method of reducing delay skew between a first twisted wire pair and a second twisted wire pair, the method comprising:

providing first insulators over first conductors used to form the first twisted wire pair, the first insulators including first longitudinal channels;

providing second insulators over second conductors used to form the second twisted wire pair, the second insulators including second longitudinal channels; and

designing the first and second longitudinal channels such that the first longitudinal channels provide the first insulators with a lower dielectric constant than a dielectric constant provided to the second insulators by the second longitudinal channels, wherein the first and second conductors have exterior surfaces that are exposed to gas within at least some of the first and second longitudinal channels;

wherein the first and second insulators have outer diameters less than about 0.042 inches.
