Abstract

Provided is a software entity adapted to operate in a first network on behalf of a relocatable device to negotiate services for the relocatable device from the network, and to be transportable or replicable to operate in a second network to negotiate services for the relocatable device from the second network.

Claims

1. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium having stored thereon a software entity adapted to operate in a first network on behalf of a relocatable device to negotiate services for the relocatable device from the first network, and to be transportable or replicable to operate in a second network to negotiate services for the relocatable device from the second network.

2. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 1 wherein the software entity comprises:

a first interface to communicate with the relocatable device.

3. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 2 wherein the software entity further comprises:

a second interface to communicate with a network service provider entity of the network within which the software entity is operating.

4. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 3 wherein the software entity further comprises:

a third interface to communicate with a run-time engine in the network within which the software entity is operating, the run-time engine being responsible for running the software entity.

5. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 1 wherein the software entity further comprises:

a fourth interface to communicate with a relocation service responsible for transporting or replicating the software entity from the first network to the second network.

6. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 1 wherein the software entity is adapted to represent a relocatable device which is a wireless terminal.

7. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 1 wherein the software entity is adapted to represent a relocatable device which is a wired terminal.

8. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 1 wherein the software entity is in a form of an object or set of objects capable of being transferred using a relocation service which is an object relocation service.

9. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 1 wherein the software entity is adapted to relocate itself proactively in advance of a move of the relocatable device from the first network to the second network.

10. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 1 wherein the software entity is adapted to relocate itself reactively in response to a move of the relocatable device from the first network to the second network.

The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 1 wherein the software entity is adapted to support custom service signalling and custom service negotiation for the relocatable device according to a user'"'"'s preferences with minimal signalling overhead on a link between the first network or the second network and the relocatable device.

A non-transitory computer readable storage medium according to claim 1 wherein the software entity is further adapted to operate in the first network on behalf of a plurality of relocatable devices to negotiate services for the relocatable devices from the first network, and to be transportable or replicable to operate in the second network to negotiate services for the relocatable devices from the second network.

13. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium having computer executable instructions stored thereon, the computer executable instructions representing a relocatable device in a plurality of networks and being executable in any one of said plurality of networks, the computer executable instructions implementing a method comprising:

interfacing with the relocatable device;

interfacing with a network service provider entity of a network of said plurality of networks within which the computer executable instructions reside;

storing a negotiating basis in respect of the relocatable device;

negotiating with the network of said plurality of networks within which the computer executable instructions reside, through the network service provider entity, services on behalf of the relocatable device using the negotiating basis, the computer executable instructions being adapted to be relocated or replicated in another of said plurality of networks.

14. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 13 wherein the method further comprises:

communicating with a run-time engine responsible for running the computer executable instructions;

interfacing with a relocation service to relocate or replicate the computer executable instructions in another network of said plurality of networks.

15. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 14 wherein the method further comprises:

receiving an input indicating the relocatable device has moved or will be moving its point of attachment from the network of said plurality of networks of said plurality of networks within which the computer executable instructions reside to a point of attachment of said another network;

the computer executable instructions being adapted to replicate or relocate themselves to said another network upon receipt of such an input.

The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 14 wherein said interfacing with the network service provider entity of the network of said plurality of networks within which the computer executable instructions reside comprises communicating using at least one of a plurality of different protocol interfaces, the at least one protocol interfaces selected for the network of said plurality of networks within which the computer executable instructions reside.

17. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 14 wherein the method further comprises:

making changes to the negotiation basis as a function of inputs associated with the relocatable device.

18. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 17 wherein the method further comprises:

propagating any changes to the negotiation basis to any replicas of the software entities that may exist.

19. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 14 wherein the method further comprises:

communicating with the relocatable device using a customizable protocol.

20. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 14 wherein the method further comprises:

supporting custom service signalling and custom service negotiation for the relocatable device according to a user'"'"'s preferences with minimal signalling overhead on a link between the network of said plurality of networks within which the computer executable instructions reside and the relocatable device.

21. A network node of a network, the network node comprising:

a processor and a memory, the memory having stored thereon a relocatable software entity run-time engine;

the network node being adapted to receive a software entity for a relocatable device when the relocatable device has moved or will move its point of attachment to be with the network, and to run the software entity on the relocatable software entity run-time engine, the network node being adapted to negotiate services for the relocatable device with the software entity.

22. The network node of claim 21 wherein the software entity comprises:

a first interface to communicate with the relocatable device;

a second interface to communicate with a network service provider entity of the network;

a third interface to communicate with the run-time engine.

23. The network node of claim 21 wherein the software entity comprises:

a fourth interface to communicate with a relocation service, the relocation service being responsible for transporting or replicating the software entity.

24. The network node of claim 21 wherein the software entity is adapted to represent a wireless terminal as the relocatable device.

25. The network node of claim 21 wherein the software entity is adapted to represent a wired terminal as the relocatable device.

26. The network node of claim 21 wherein the software entity is in a form of an object or set of objects capable of being transferred using a relocation service which is an object relocation service.

27. The network node of claim 21 adapted to relocate the software entity proactively in advance of a move of the relocatable device.

28. The network node of claim 21 adapted to relocate the software entity reactively in response to a move of the relocatable device.

29. The network node of claim 21 wherein the software entity comprises:

instructions for storing a negotiating basis in respect of the relocatable device;

instructions for negotiating with the network, through a network service provider entity, services on behalf of the relocatable device using the negotiating basis.

30. The network node of claim 22 wherein said interface for interfacing with a network service provider entity of the network is adapted to communicate using a plurality of different protocol interfaces.

31. The network node of claim 29 wherein the software entity is further adapted to make changes to the negotiation basis as a function of inputs associated with the relocatable device.

32. The network node of claim 31 further adapted to propagate any changes to the negotiation basis to any replicas of the software entities that may exist.

33. The network node of claim 21 wherein the software entity is adapted to support custom service signalling and custom service negotiation for the relocatable device according to a user'"'"'s preferences with minimal signalling overhead on a link between the network and the relocatable device.

34. A method in a network node of a network, the method comprising:

receiving a relocatable or replicable software entity for a relocatable device when the relocatable device has moved or will move its point of attachment to be with the network;

running the software entity; and

negotiating services for the relocatable device with the software entity.
