Abstract

A system and method for calibrating a local radio reference clock for a radio operating in a radio network having a network reference clock. The method comprises determining at the radio an offset between the local clock and the network clock, placing the local clock in a calibration mode, and calibrating the local clock using a radio link to reduce the offset.

Claims

1. A method of calibrating a local radio reference clock for a radio operating in a radio network having a network reference clock, comprising the steps of:

determining at the radio an offset between the local radio reference clock and the network reference clock;

placing the local radio reference clock in a calibration mode; and

calibrating the local radio reference clock by reducing sufficiently slowly the offset between the local radio reference clock and the network reference clock to enable continued radio communication with a node during calibration, the offset being reduced by adjustment of a tuning voltage of the local radio reference clock.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein information representative of the offset is transmitted from the radio to a remote location and the remote location places the local radio reference clock in calibration mode.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the information representative of the offset is an alarm indication.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the offset is determined as a function of measurements taken by the network reference clock.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the measurements are taken at predefined intervals.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein the measurements are taken continuously.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the network reference clock is a reference clock for a synchronous communication protocol.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the radio network communicates using an asynchronous communication protocol and the network reference clock is replaced by a network reference clock signal injected into a data-carrying communication channel.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of determining the offset further comprises the steps of:

summing n offsets; and

dividing the sum by n.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the step of determining the offset further comprises comparing the sum divided by n to a predetermined threshold.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the network reference clock is selected from a group comprising:

a Global Positioning System signal, a Pulse Code Modulated signal, a crystal oscillator, an oven controlled crystal oscillator, an oven voltage controlled crystal oscillator, and a voltage controlled oscillator.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the local radio reference clock is selected from a group comprising:

a crystal oscillator, an oven controlled crystal oscillator, an oven voltage controlled crystal oscillator, and a voltage controlled oscillator.

13. The method of claim 1, further comprising communicating information representative of the offset from the network reference clock to the radio.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising communicating information representative of the offset from the radio to the network reference clock and placing the local radio reference clock in calibration mode.

15. A radio network comprising:

a local reference clock in a radio;

a network reference clock remote from the radio;

a component configured to determine an offset between the local radio reference clock and the network reference clock; and

a calibration unit for calibrating the local radio reference clock, the calibration comprising reducing sufficiently slowly the offset between the local radio reference clock and the network reference clock to enable continued radio communication with a node during calibration, the offset being reduced by adjustment of a tuning voltage of the local radio reference clock.

16. The radio network of claim 15, wherein the offset is determined as a function of measurements taken by the network reference clock.

17. The radio network of claim 15, wherein the network reference clock is a reference clock for a synchronous communication protocol.

18. The radio network of claim 15, wherein the radio network communicates using an asynchronous communication protocol and the network reference clock is replaced by a network reference clock signal injected into a data-carrying communication channel.

19. The radio network of claim 15, wherein the network reference clock is selected from a group comprising:

a Global Positioning System signal, a Pulse Code Modulated signal, a crystal oscillator, an oven controlled crystal oscillator, an oven voltage controlled crystal oscillator, and a voltage controlled oscillator.

20. The radio network of claim 15, wherein the local radio reference clock is selected from a group comprising:

a crystal oscillator, an oven controlled crystal oscillator, an oven voltage controlled crystal oscillator, and a voltage controlled oscillator.
