1. A sidewall coring apparatus for obtaining a plurality of formation cores from a sidewall of a wellbore, the sidewall coring apparatus comprising:
- a core catching tube configured to store the plurality of formation cores therein and configured to be sealed downhole, wherein the core catching tube comprises;
an inner sleeve;
an outer sleeve concentric with the inner sleeve; and
a spring biasing the outer sleeve with respect to the inner sleeve;
wherein the inner and outer sleeves comprise corresponding slots configured to align in response to relative movement of the inner and outer sleeves, and when aligned the slots of the inner and outer sleeves allow evacuation of fluid from the core catching tube as one or more of the plurality of formation cores is inserted into the core catching tube.

Abstract
A sidewall coring apparatus for obtaining a plurality of formation cores from a sidewall of a wellbore includes a core catching tube configured to be sealed downhole and to store the plurality of formation cores therein. The core catching tubes includes an inner sleeve and an outer sleeve concentric with the inner sleeve. The inner and outer sleeves include corresponding slots configured to align in response to relative movement of the inner and outer sleeves, and when aligned the slots of the inner and outer sleeves allow evacuation of fluid from the core catching tube as each of the plurality of formation cores is inserted into the core catching tube.

7. A method of operating a sidewall coring apparatus for obtaining a plurality of formation cores from a sidewall of a wellbore, the method comprising:

moving the plurality of formation cores into a core catching tube comprising an inner sleeve and an outer sleeve concentric with the inner sleeve; evacuating fluid through aligned corresponding slots of the inner and outer sleeves as one or more of the plurality of formation cores is inserted into the core catching tubes; and sealing the plurality of formation cores in the core catching tube downhole, wherein sealing the plurality of formation cores in the core catching tubes comprises inserting a capture plug into an end of the core catching tube to displace the outer sleeve with respect to the inner sleeve. - View Dependent Claims (8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15)

16. A sidewall coring apparatus for obtaining a plurality of formation cores from a sidewall of a wellbore, the sidewall coring apparatus comprising:

a core catching tube configured to store the plurality of formation cores therein and configured to be sealed downhole, wherein the core catching tube comprises; an inner sleeve; and an outer sleeve concentric with the inner sleeve; wherein the inner and outer sleeves comprise corresponding slots configured to align in response to relative movement of the inner and outer sleeves, and when aligned the slots of the inner and outer sleeves allow evacuation of fluid from the core catching tube as one or more of the plurality of formation cores is inserted into the core catching tube; and a fluid port configured to allow further evacuation of fluid from the core catching tube as one or more of the plurality of formation cores is introduced therein, wherein the fluid port comprises a fluid passageway extending through the inner sleeve.

20. A method of operating a sidewall coring apparatus for obtaining a plurality of formation cores from a sidewall of a wellbore, the method comprising:

moving the plurality of formation cores into a core catching tube comprising an inner sleeve and an outer sleeve concentric with the inner sleeve; evacuating fluid through aligned corresponding slots of the inner and outer sleeves as one or more of the plurality of formation cores is inserted into the core catching tubes; further evacuating fluid through a port in the core catching tube as each of the plurality of formation cores is inserted into the core catching tube; and sealing the plurality of formation cores in the core catching tube downhole, wherein sealing the plurality of formation cores in the core catching tube further comprises sealing the port in the core catching tube and closing the corresponding slots of the inner and outer sleeves.
