1. A method for inserting a transcutaneous analyte sensor into a host using an applicator, the method comprising the steps of:

  • placing an applicator system against a skin of a host, the applicator system comprising a housing configured for placement against the skin of the host, a sensor configured for transcutaneous placement through the skin of a host, and an applicator comprising applicator components, a needle and a spring-loaded mechanism configured to insert the needle and the sensor into the host and subsequently retract the needle from the host; and

    inserting the needle and the sensor into the host and subsequently retracting the needle from the host using a continuous torque whereby the applicator components rotatingly engage one another to insert the sensor into the host, wherein the sensor is inserted automatically into the host to a predetermined depth responsive to actuation of a trigger.
