Abstract

A method and system for minimizing the control overhead in a multi-carrier wireless communication network that utilizes a time-frequency resource is disclosed. In some embodiments, one or more zones in the time-frequency resource are designated for particular applications, such as a zone dedicated for voice-over-IP (VoIP) applications. By grouping applications of a similar type together within a zone, a reduction in the number of bits necessary for mapping a packet stream to a portion of the time-frequency resource can be achieved. In some embodiments, modular coding schemes associated with the packet streams may be selected that further reduce the amount of necessary control information. In some embodiments, packets may be classified for transmission in accordance with application type, QoS parameters, and other properties. In some embodiments, improved control messages may be constructed to facilitate the control process and minimize associated overhead.

Claims

1. A method of communication for a mobile device served by a base station in a packet communication system that utilizes a time-frequency resource, the method comprising:

receiving a control message among a plurality of control messages transmitted from the serving base station, wherein the plurality of control messages are associated with a class of packets and aggregated together in a control message format in accordance with a common characteristic of the class of packets; and

transmitting to the serving base station a packet of the class over a zone in accordance with the control message, wherein;

the zone is designated for carrying packets of the class and is comprised of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) symbols in the time domain and frequency subcarriers in the frequency domain within the time-frequency resource, and the portion of the time-frequency resource falling outside of the zone is designated for carrying packets other than the class of packets within the zone; and

the packet is transmitted with one of a plurality of modulation and coding schemes, the plurality of modulation and coding schemes utilizing a basic time-frequency resource unit and integer multiples of the basic time-frequency resource unit.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the control message includes a destination for the packet.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the control message includes a modulation and coding scheme for the packet.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the control message includes an airlink resource allocation for the packet.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the control message includes a connection identifier, a resource identification parameter, or both a connection identifier and a resource identification parameter.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the control message includes power control information for the packet.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the zone is divided into a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns to form a coordinate system.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein a location of a packet within the zone is specified by an offset from an origin of the zone.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein a location of a packet within the zone is specified by a starting row and column coordinate and an ending row and column coordinate.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein a granularity of a time coordinate is an OFDM symbol and a granularity of a frequency coordinate is a frequency subcarrier.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the basic time-frequency resource unit has a pre-defined size.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the location of each basic time-frequency resource unit within the zone is determined based on a mapping to a sequence number.

13. A mobile device served by a base station in a packet communication system that utilizes a time-frequency resource, the mobile device comprising:

a receiver configured for receiving a control message among a plurality of control messages transmitted from the serving base station, wherein the plurality of control messages are associated with a class of packets and aggregated together in a control message format in accordance with a common characteristic of the class of packets; and

a transmitter configured for transmitting to the serving base station a packet of the class over a zone in accordance with the control message, wherein;

the zone is designated for carrying packets of the class and is comprised of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) symbols in time domain and frequency subcarriers in frequency domain within the time-frequency resource, and the portion of the time-frequency resource falling outside of the zone is designated for carrying packets other than the class of packets within the zone; and

the packet is transmitted with one of a plurality of modulation and coding schemes, the plurality of modulation and coding schemes utilizing a basic time-frequency resource unit and integer multiples of the basic time-frequency resource unit.

14. The mobile device of claim 13, wherein the control message includes a destination for the packet.

15. The mobile device of claim 13, wherein the control message includes a modulation and coding scheme for the packet.

16. The mobile device of claim 13, wherein the control message includes an airlink resource allocation for the packet.

17. The mobile device of claim 13, wherein the control message includes a connection identifier, a resource identification parameter, or both a connection identifier and a resource identification parameter.

18. The mobile device of claim 13, wherein the control message includes power control information for the packet.

19. The mobile device of claim 13, wherein the zone is divided into a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns to form a coordinate system.

20. The mobile device of claim 19, wherein a location of a packet within the zone is specified by an offset from an origin of the zone.

21. The mobile device of claim 19, wherein a location of a packet within the zone may be specified by a starting row and column coordinate and an ending row and column coordinate.

22. The mobile device of claim 19, wherein a granularity of a time coordinate is an OFDM symbol and a granularity of a frequency coordinate is a frequency subcarrier.

23. The mobile device of claim 13, wherein the basic time-frequency resource unit has a pre-defined size.

24. The mobile device of claim 23, wherein the location of each basic time-frequency resource unit within the zone is determined based on a mapping to a sequence number.
