1. A cell controller adapted for a wireless communication system and comprising:
- a processor operatively coupled, via a wired network connection, to an RF port housed in a first housing, wherein the processor is housed in a second housing that is physically separate and spatially remote from said first housing, and wherein the RF port is configured to perform a first plurality of functions of the wireless communication standard protocol;
a memory housed in said second housing, said memory adapted to store software for a second plurality of functions of the wireless communication standard protocol;
wherein the processor is receptive of a first signal from said RF port from a first Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) having a first coverage area and a second signal from said RF port from a second WLAN having a second coverage area that at least partially overlaps said first coverage;
said processor adapted to execute said software stored in said memory to perform said second plurality of functions of the wireless communication standard protocol for said first signal and said second signal, wherein the first WLAN and the second WLAN are accessible at substantially the same time;
wherein the first plurality of functions and the second plurality of functions each include at least one media access control (MAC) function of the wireless communication standard protocol.

Abstract
A wireless local area network is provided with at least one cell controller and simplified RF ports which are configured to provide lower level media access control functions. Higher level media access control functions are provided in a cell controller, which may service one or more RF ports that are capable operating with at least two wireless local area subnetworks. Mobile units can also be configured with the higher level media access control functions being performed in a host processor.
