Abstract

A system, method, and apparatus for palletizing cargo on a rack for shipment are provided. The system generally includes a tiered rack having a base tier, a support framework extending from the base tier, and a second tier adjustably attached to the support framework. The system may further include a plurality of lower frame support members positioned longitudinally across the bottom of the base tier, and a plurality of pneumatically actuated rollers spaced to cooperatively engage the plurality of lower frame support members, the rollers being selectively extendable from a plurality of raised tracks positioned longitudinally along a floor of the railcar, where the rollers are configured to pneumatically extend past an upper surface of the track when actuated and allow for linear motion there over.

Claims

1. Apparatus for loading a refrigerated boxcar type railcar for shipment of the load on a railway, said apparatus comprising:

a first railway for accommodating said refrigerated boxcar type railcar thereon,

a staging area alongside and adjacent said first railway and extending laterally therefrom for receiving cargo-carrying vehicles that enter the staging area and unload,

a second railway in said staging area, wider than said first railway and presenting a guide way spaced from and alongside said first railway and disposed in generally parallel relationship thereto, and including parallel rails extending through said staging area,

a refrigerated transfer dock for receiving a cargo container rack thereon, said transfer dock being movable along said parallel rails of the guide way to a loading position alongside said first railway in the staging area for transfer of refrigerated cargo directly to said refrigerated boxcar type railcar on the first railway, said cargo container rack having a base tier and at least one tier thereabove for receiving, separating and securing stacks of refrigerated palletized loads thereon to maintain the integrity of the refrigerated palletized loads for transport by rail, and

a conveyor for laterally transferring said cargo container rack as a unit from said loading position into said refrigerated boxcar type railcar to a loaded position in the railcar in a single operation, and for laterally transferring said cargo container rack as a unit from said railcar in a single operation at a delivery destination, whereby the cargo container rack load is transferred to said refrigerated boxcar type railcar in a single loading operation and then delivered from said refrigerated boxcar the box type railcar in a single unloading operation at said delivery destination.

2. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said conveyor includes a plurality of rollers movable to activated positions projecting upwardly from a receiving surface and to deactivated positions wherein said rollers are below said receiving surface.

3. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said conveyor includes at least one roller track located in said refrigerated boxcar type railcar.

4. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said cargo container rack further comprises an air permeable mesh positioned to support said refrigerated palletized loads.

5. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said cargo container rack further comprises a mesh side wall.

6. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein a height of said at least one tier of said cargo container rack is adjustable to receive varying heights of said refrigerated palletized loads on said base tier.
