Abstract

A hand-held microfluidic testing device is provided. The testing device includes a housing having at least one cartridge receiving port and at least one cartridge for inputting to the cartridge receiving port, and an optical detection system in the housing, where the optical detection system is disposed to analyze at least one sample in the in at least one detection channel of the cartridge. The cartridge includes at least one sample inlet and sample outlet, at least one buffer inlet and buffer outlet, at least one detection material inlet and outlet, at least one calibration standard inlet and calibration standard outlet and a detection window disposed above a detection region of a channel, where the analysis cartridge is surrounded by a protective shell, that holds the analysis chip base, a chip lid, a sealing gasket, and protective film cover.

Claims

1. A hand-held microfluidic testing device comprising:

a. a housing, wherein said housing comprises at least one cartridge receiving port;

b. at least one cartridge for input to said at least one cartridge receiving port, wherein said at least one cartridge comprises at least one separation channel, wherein said separation channel comprises a continuously varying geometry along an x-axis, wherein said continuously varying geometry is disposed to provide a continuous distribution of velocities along a y-axis of said channel of a moving solution, wherein said moving solution moves in a continuous x-direction, wherein curved channel walls provide longer path lengths along said channel walls than path lengths along a center of said channel, wherein said distribution of velocities along said y-axis separates larger particles from smaller particles; and

c. an optical detection system in said housing, wherein said optical detection system is disposed to analyze at least one sample in said at least one cartridge.

2. The hand-held microfluidic testing device of claim 1, wherein said cartridge further comprises a detection window, a detection inlet, a detection outlet, a buffer inlet, a buffer outlet, a calibration inlet, a calibration outlet, a sample inlet, and a sample outlet.

3. The hand-held microfluidic testing device of claim 1, wherein said separation channel further comprises:

a. a first sample channel region and a second sample channel region, wherein a cross-section of said first sample channel region is smaller than a cross-section of said second sample channel region;

b. a detection region comprising a first detection region and a second detection region, wherein a cross-section of said first detection region is larger than a cross-section of said second detection region and said second sample channel region is connected to said first detection region; and

c. a marker input channel disposed to input markers into said second sample channel region, wherein said markers are larger than said cross-section of said first sample channel region and said cross-section of said second detection region, wherein said markers collect in said first detection region.

4. The hand-held microfluidic testing device of claim 3, wherein said markers have a size in a range of 10 nm to 10 μ

m.

The hand-held microfluidic testing device of claim 3, wherein said buffer solution moves when subject to forces selected from the group consisting of electroosmosis, electrophoresis, fluid pressure, moveable wall pressure, undulary electroosmosis, undulary electrophoresis, undulary fluid pressure and undulary moveable wall pressure, wherein said markers move according to movement of said buffer solution.

The hand-held microfluidic testing device of claim 3, wherein said markers are selected from the group consisting of gold particles, copper particles, silver particles, fluorescent particles, magnetic particles, particles having binding chemistry, latex particle, polystyrene particles and quantum dots.

7. The hand-held microfluidic testing device of claim 3, wherein said second detection region comprises a sieve structure having openings that are smaller than said markers.

8. The hand-held microfluidic testing device of claim 1, wherein said optical detection system is selected from the group consisting of Raman spectroscopy, UV/visible spectroscopy, near infrared spectroscopy, and laser-induced fluorescence.
