Abstract

Materials and methods related to blood pump systems are described. These can be used in patients to, for example, monitor arterial pressure, measure blood flow, maintain left ventricular pressure within a particular range, avoid left ventricular collapse, prevent fusion of the aortic valve in a subject having a blood pump, and provide a means to wean a patient from a blood pump.

Claims

1. A blood pump system, comprising:

a blood pump having an inflow conduit for receiving blood from a ventricle of a heart and an outflow conduit for returning blood to a circulatory system; and

a controller operably connected to the blood pump;

wherein the controller is configured to periodically;

reduce a speed of the blood pump to cause an inflow conduit pressure at the inflow conduit to be substantially equal to or greater than an outflow conduit pressure at the outflow conduit;

operate the blood pump at the reduced speed for a set length of time or number of heart beats; and

after operating the blood pump at the reduced speed for the set length of time or number of heart beats, increase the speed of the blood pump.

2. The blood pump system of claim 1, wherein the controller is further configured to calculate blood flow through the blood pump.

3. The blood pump system of claim 2, wherein the controller is configured to output information regarding the calculated blood flow for display.

4. The blood pump system of claim 2, wherein the blood flow calculation is based on the detected left ventricular pressure and the detected arterial pressure.

5. The blood pump system of claim 2, wherein the blood flow calculation is based on detected pressure changes within the blood pump.

6. The blood pump system of claim 2, wherein the blood flow calculation is based on a motor speed of the pump and the pressure drop across the pump.

7. The blood pump system of claim 2, wherein the blood flow is calculated using the following formula:

where C=an empirically derived constant describing the pump geometry, surface conditions, and viscosity.

8. The blood pump system of claim 1, wherein the blood pump system further comprises first and second sensors configured to detect left ventricular pressure and arterial pressure, respectively, on a continuous basis.

9. The blood pump system of claim 1, wherein the blood pump system further comprises first and second sensors configured to detect left ventricular pressure and arterial pressure, respectively, on a periodic basis.

10. The blood pump system of claim 1, wherein the blood pump system further comprises first and second sensors configured to detect left ventricular pressure and arterial pressure, respectively, on an on-demand basis.

11. The blood pump system of claim 1, wherein to reduce the speed of the blood pump, the controller is configured to reduce the speed of the blood pump to cause the inflow conduit pressure to equal or exceed the outflow conduit pressure during systole.

The blood pump system of claim 1, wherein to increase the speed of the blood pump, the controller is configured to increase the speed of the blood pump to a speed of the blood pump immediately before being reduced to cause the inflow conduit pressure at the inflow conduit to be substantially equal to or greater than the outflow conduit pressure at the outflow conduit.

13. The blood pump system of claim 1, wherein to reduce the speed of the blood pump, the controller is configured to send a signal to the blood pump that reduces the speed of the blood pump to permit washing of an aortic valve sinus.

14. A blood pump system, comprising:

a blood pump having an inflow conduit for receiving blood from a ventricle of a heart and an outflow conduit for returning blood to a circulatory system; and

a controller operably connected to the blood pump;

wherein the controller is configured to periodically;

operate the blood pump at a first speed;

reduce the speed of the blood pump from the first speed to a second speed at which an inflow conduit pressure at the inflow conduit is substantially equal to or greater than an outflow conduit pressure at the outflow conduit;

operate the blood pump at the second speed for a set length of time or number of heart beats; and

after operating the blood pump at the second speed for the set length of time or number of heart beats, increasing the speed of the blood pump from the reduced speed to the first speed.

15. The blood pump system of claim 14, wherein the controller is further configured to calculate blood flow through the blood pump.

16. The blood pump system of claim 15, wherein to periodically reduce the speed of the blood pump, the controller is configured to reduce the speed of the blood pump at a set interval.
