1. A method of implanting an implantable cardiac device for subcutaneous implantation in a patient, the patient having a torso including a ribcage, sternum and spine, the method comprising:

  • implanting a first electrode, electrode A, having a surface area in the range of about 5-15 cm2 at an anterior position adjacent to the sternum of the patient; and

    implanting a second electrode, electrode P, at a second position on the ribcage of the patient in front of the armpit of the patient;

    wherein electrode A and electrode P each has an inner metallic surface;

    wherein electrode A and electrode P are coupled to defibrillation circuitry for delivering a defibrillation shock between electrode A and electrode P.
