Abstract

Transport apparatus which includes computerized apparatus useful for obtaining and displaying information. In one embodiment, the computerized apparatus includes a network interface, display device, and speech recognition apparatus configured to receive user speech input and enable performance of various tasks via a remote entity, such as obtaining desired information relating to maps or directions, or any number of other topics. The downloaded data may also, in one variant, be displayed with contextually related advertising or other content.

Claims

1. A transport apparatus configured to transport one or more persons from one location to the next, comprising:

control apparatus configured to enable control of at least one aspect of the motion or operation of the transport apparatus;

a passenger compartment; and

computerized information and display apparatus disposed at least partly within the passenger compartment, the information and display apparatus comprising;

a network interface;

processing apparatus in data communication with the network interface;

a display device; and

a storage apparatus comprising at least one computer program, said at least one program being configured to, when executed;

obtain digitized speech generated based on speech received from a passenger, the digitized speech comprising an affirmative query for desired information which the passenger wishes to find; and

cause, based at least in part on the digitized speech, access of a remote network entity to cause retrieval of the desired information;

wherein the computerized information and display apparatus is further configured to display advertising content on the display device, the content received via the network interface and selected based at least in part on the digitized speech.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the received content is selected from a plurality of advertising content that is contextually related to the desired information.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the desired information comprises information relating to an entity or location.

4. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the desired information comprises information relating to a business entity or organization, and the contextual relationship comprises a contextual relationship between the selected content and an industry or type of the business entity or organization.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the desired action comprises obtaining information relating to a particular topical area, and the selected advertising content comprises advertising content that is contextually related to the topical area.

6. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the topical area is selected from the group consisting of (i) directions to a particular location or destination;

and (ii) the location of a nearby establishment or point of interest.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the computerized information apparatus is further configured to receive at least a portion of information obtained via the access of the remote network entity via the network interface for provision to a portable user device via a data interface of the computerized apparatus.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the information provided to the portable device is configured according to a user-specific profile.

9. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the display device comprises a touch-screen display and input device having a plurality of soft function keys rendered thereon, the soft function keys being configured to generate one or more inputs relating to the information to be provided to the portable device.

10. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the network interface comprises a wireless interface compliant with an IEEE 802.11 WLAN standard.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising video data apparatus in data communication with the processing apparatus and configured to enable video data to be generated and displayed on the display device.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the video data is generated by one or more cameras associated with the transport apparatus so as to enable monitoring of one or more portions of an area surrounding the transport apparatus.

13. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising video data apparatus in data communication with the processing apparatus and configured to enable video data to be generated and sent to a remote location for viewing thereat.

14. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the display device comprises a thin-film transistor (TFT)-based display device.

15. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the apparatus is further configured to display one or more hyperlinks relating to a particular website or universal resource locator (URL) that are selectable by a passenger.

16. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the information and display apparatus further comprises software configured for conversion of digital data to audible speech signals.

17. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the computerized information and display apparatus further comprises a speech synthesis apparatus which is configured to generate audible sounds for the passenger, the sounds comprising human-intelligible words relating to the passenger'"'"'s digitized speech query.

18. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the sounds comprise a sequence of words or phrases which direct the passenger to take one or more actions.

19. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the display device is mounted substantially flush with a surface of the interior of the passenger compartment so as to be visible by at least one passenger of the transport apparatus, yet mitigate incidental contact therewith.

20. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the transport apparatus comprises a land-mobile personnel transport device configured to move from one geographic location to another while carrying multiple passengers.

21. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein the information and display apparatus further comprises a communication apparatus configured to enable at least voice communication by a passenger with a remote monitoring station while the transport apparatus is in operation.

22. A transport apparatus configured to transport one or more persons from one location to another, comprising:

a passenger compartment; and

computerized information and display apparatus disposed at least partly within the passenger compartment, the information and display apparatus comprising;

a wireless network interface;

processing apparatus in data communication with the network interface;

a microphone;

a display device; and

a storage apparatus comprising at least one computer program, said at least one program being configured to, when executed;

obtain digitized speech generated based on speech received from a passenger via the microphone, the digitized speech comprising an affirmative request for desired information which the passenger wishes to find via a network search, the desired information relating to at least one of a plurality of predetermined topics of interest; and

cause, based at least in part on the digitized speech, search of a remote network entity to cause retrieval of the desired information;

wherein the apparatus is further configured to display content on the display device, the content received via the network interface and selected based at least in part on the digitized speech.

23. The apparatus of claim 22, wherein the received content is selected from a plurality of advertising content that is contextually related to the desired information.

24. The apparatus of claim 22, wherein the at least one topic of interest comprises directions or maps, and the desired information comprises information relating to directions or a map for a particular entity or location.

25. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the desired information comprises information relating to a business entity or organization, and the contextual relationship comprises a contextual relationship between the selected content and an industry or type of the business entity or organization.

26. The apparatus of claim 22, wherein the selected content comprises advertising content that is contextually related to the at least one topic of interest.

27. The apparatus of claim 26, wherein the at least one topic of interest area is selected from the group consisting of (i) directions to a particular location or destination;

and (ii) the location of a nearby establishment or point of interest.

28. The apparatus of claim 22, wherein the computerized information apparatus is further configured to receive at least a portion of information obtained via the access of the remote network entity via the network interface for provision to a portable user device via a data interface of the computerized apparatus.

29. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein the information provided to the portable device is configured according to a user-specific profile.

30. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein the display device comprises a touch-screen display and input device having a plurality of soft function keys rendered thereon, the soft function keys being configured to generate one or more inputs relating to the information to be provided to the portable device.

31. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein the network interface comprises a wireless interface compliant with an IEEE 802.11 WLAN standard.

32. The apparatus of claim 22, further comprising video data apparatus in data communication with the processing apparatus and configured to enable video data to be generated and displayed on the display device.

33. The apparatus of claim 32, wherein the video data is generated by one or more cameras associated with the computerized information and display apparatus, so as to enable monitoring of one or more portions of premises proximate to the transport apparatus.

34. The apparatus of claim 22, further comprising video data apparatus in data communication with the processing apparatus and configured to enable video data to be generated and sent to a remote location for viewing thereat.

35. The apparatus of claim 22, wherein the apparatus is further configured to display one or more hyperlinks relating to a particular website or universal resource locator (URL) that are selectable by the passenger.

The apparatus of claim 22, wherein the computerized information and display apparatus further comprises a speech synthesis apparatus which is configured to generate audible sounds for the passenger, the sounds comprising human-intelligible words, the words comprising a sequence of words or phrases which direct the passenger to take one or more actions relating to the desired information, the one or more actions which, when taken, cause further words or phrases to be generated.

37. A land-mobile transport apparatus configured to transport one or more persons from one location to another, comprising:

a passenger compartment; and

computerized information and display apparatus disposed at least partly within the passenger compartment, the information and display apparatus comprising;

a wireless network interface;

processing apparatus in data communication with the network interface;

a display device configured to be viewable by an occupant of the land-mobile apparatus during use; and

a storage apparatus comprising at least one computer program, said at least one program being configured to, when executed;

obtain digitized speech generated based on speech received from the occupant, the digitized speech comprising a request for desired information which the occupant wishes to obtain;

cause, based at least in part on the digitized speech, access of a remote network entity via the network interface to cause retrieval of the desired information; and

receive the desired information via the network interface;

wherein the apparatus is further configured to display at least a portion of the desired information on the display device, the information received via the network interface and selected based at least in part on the digitized speech; and

wherein the desired information comprises at least one of a map and/or directions to a particular organization or entity accessible by the transport apparatus.

The apparatus of claim 37, wherein the desired information comprises at least both of the map and the directions to a particular organization or entity accessible by the transport apparatus, and the directions include at least one arrow showing a path for the transport apparatus to follow to get to the organization or entity.

The apparatus of claim 37, wherein the desired information comprises at least both of the map and directions to a particular organization or entity accessible by the land-mobile apparatus, and the computerized information and display apparatus further comprises a speech synthesis apparatus which is configured to generate audible sounds for the occupant, the sounds comprising human-intelligible words relating to the occupant'"'"'s digitized speech.

40. The apparatus of claim 37, wherein the desired information comprises at least one of a map and directions to a particular organization or entity accessible by the transport apparatus, and the computerized information and display apparatus further comprises a speech synthesis apparatus which is configured to generate audible sounds for the occupant, the sounds comprising human-intelligible words, the words comprising a sequence of words or phrases which direct the occupant to take one or more actions so as to enable the occupant to find the organization or entity.

41. The apparatus of claim 37, wherein the at least one computer program is further configured to receive at least one subsequent digitized speech input from the occupant in order to resolve at least one ambiguity relating to the desired information.

42. A transport apparatus configured to transport one or more persons from one location to another, comprising:

a passenger compartment; and

computerized information and display apparatus disposed at least partly within the passenger compartment, the information and display apparatus comprising;

a wireless network interface;

processing apparatus in data communication with the network interface;

a display device configured to be viewable by an occupant of the transport apparatus during use; and

a storage apparatus comprising at least one computer program, said at least one program being configured to, when executed;

obtain digitized speech generated based on speech received from the occupant, the digitized speech comprising one or more terms relating to a desired information which the occupant wishes to obtain;

cause, based at least in part on at least one of the one or more terms, access of a remote network entity via the network interface to cause retrieval of the desired information; and

receive the desired information via the network interface;

wherein the computerized information and display apparatus is further configured to display at least a portion of the desired information on the display device, the information received via the network interface and selected based at least in part on the digitized speech; and

wherein the desired information comprises at least one of a map and/or directions to a particular organization or entity accessible by the transport apparatus, the at least one map and/or directions comprising a graphical representation of the organization or entity and its surroundings.

43. The apparatus of claim 42, wherein the transport apparatus further comprises a control system having a plurality of functions associated therewith, each configured to control respective ones of functions relating to the operation of the transport apparatus.

44. The apparatus of claim 42, wherein the computerized information and display apparatus is further configured to determine a travel time to a destination of the transport apparatus.

45. The apparatus of claim 44, wherein the travel time is used at least in part to select one of a plurality of secondary content elements for display on the display device.

46. The apparatus of claim 45, wherein the plurality of secondary content elements comprise advertising content elements.

47. The apparatus of claim 46, wherein the one advertising content element is contextually related to the desired information.

48. A land-mobile personnel transport device configured to transport one or more persons from one location to another, comprising:

a passenger compartment; and

computerized information and display apparatus disposed at least partly within the passenger compartment, the information and display apparatus comprising;

a wireless network interface;

processing apparatus in data communication with the network interface;

a display device configured to be viewable by an occupant of the land-mobile apparatus during use; and

computerized logic configured to, when executed;

obtain digitized speech generated based on speech received from the occupant, the received speech comprising a request for desired information which the occupant wishes to obtain;

cause, based at least in part on the digitized speech, access of a remote network entity via the network interface to cause retrieval of the desired information; and

receive the desired information via the network interface;

wherein the information and display apparatus is further configured to display at least a portion of the desired information on the display device, the information received via the network interface and selected based at least in part on the digitized speech; and

wherein the desired information comprises at least one of a map and/or directions to a particular organization or entity accessible by the occupant.

The device of claim 48, wherein the desired information comprises at least the map and the directions to a particular organization or entity accessible by the occupant, and the directions comprise at least one arrow showing a path for the transport apparatus to follow to get the occupant proximate to the organization or entity.

The device of claim 48, wherein the desired information comprises at least both of the map and directions to a particular organization or entity, and the computerized information and display apparatus further comprises a speech synthesis apparatus which is configured to generate audible sounds for the occupant, the sounds comprising human-intelligible words relating to the occupant'"'"'s digitized speech.

The device of claim 48, wherein the desired information comprises at least a map, and the transport device further comprises a speech synthesis apparatus which is configured to generate audible sounds for the occupant, the sounds comprising human-intelligible words, the words comprising a sequence of words or phrases which direct the occupant to take one or more actions so as to enable the occupant to find the organization or entity.

52. The device of claim 51, wherein the one or more actions comprise provision of one or more inputs subsequent to the digitized speech.

The device of claim 52, wherein the display device comprises a touch screen display device, and the one or more subsequent inputs comprise one or more inputs provided via a touch screen of the touch screen display device, the one or more inputs comprising selection of an interactive link or display region displayed on the display device subsequent to the occupants initial digitized speech input.

54. The device of claim 48, wherein the one or more subsequent inputs are received from the occupant in order to resolve at least one ambiguity relating to the desired information.

55. The device of claim 54, wherein the at least one ambiguity relating to the desired information comprises a plurality of possible matching results.

The device of claim 55, wherein the one or more subsequent inputs comprise one or more subsequent speech inputs, the one or more subsequent speech inputs comprising additional information not present in the initial digitized speech, the additional information facilitating the ambiguity resolution.

57. The device of claim 48, wherein the at least one computer program is further configured to receive at least one subsequent digitized speech input from the occupant in order to resolve at least one ambiguity relating to multiple possible matches for the desired information.

58. The device of claim 48, wherein the apparatus is further configured to display secondary content on the display device, the secondary content received via the network interface and selected based at least in part on the digitized speech.

59. The device of claim 58, wherein the received secondary content comprises content that is contextually related to the desired information.

60. The device of claim 59, wherein the received secondary content comprises advertising content, the advertising content related to one or more goods or services relating to or used during travel.

61. The device of claim 58, wherein the received secondary content comprises advertising content, the advertising content related to one or more goods or services.

62. The device of claim 48, wherein the organization or entity comprises a business, and the computerized apparatus is further configured to display secondary content that has a contextual relationship with an industry or type of the business organization or entity.

63. The device of claim 48, wherein the device is further configured to receive at least a portion of information obtained via the access of the remote network entity via the network interface for provision to a portable user device via a data interface of the transport device.

64. The device of claim 63, wherein the information provided to the portable device is configured according to a user-specific profile.

65. The device of claim 63, wherein the display device comprises a touch-screen display and input device having a plurality of soft function keys rendered thereon, the soft function keys being configured to generate one or more inputs relating to the information to be provided to the portable device.

66. The device of claim 48, wherein the network interface comprises a wireless interface compliant with an IEEE 802.11 WLAN standard.

67. The device of claim 48, further comprising video data apparatus in data communication with the processing apparatus and configured to enable video data to be generated and displayed on the display device.

68. The device of claim 67, wherein the video data is generated by one or more cameras associated with the personnel transport device so as to enable monitoring of one or more portions of an area surrounding the personnel transport device.

69. The device of claim 48, further comprising video data apparatus in data communication with the processing apparatus and configured to enable video data to be generated and sent to a remote location for viewing thereat.

70. The device of claim 48, further configured to display one or more hyperlinks relating to a particular website or universal resource locator (URL) that are selectable by the occupant.

71. The device of claim 48, wherein the display device is mounted substantially flush with a surface of the interior of the passenger compartment so as to be visible by at least the occupant, yet mitigate incidental contact therewith.

72. The device of claim 71, further comprising a plurality of doors which provide access to the passenger compartment.

73. The device of claim 72, further comprising video data apparatus in data communication with the processing apparatus and configured to enable video data to be generated and displayed on the display device, the video data generated by one or more cameras associated with the personnel transport device so as to enable monitoring of one or more portions of an area surrounding the personnel transport device.

74. The device of claim 73, wherein the device is further configured to provide at least a portion of information obtained via the access of the remote network entity and via the network interface to a portable user device via a data interface of the portable user device.

75. The device of claim 73, further comprising a communication apparatus configured to enable at least voice communication by a passenger with a remote monitoring station while the transport device is in operation.

76. The device of claim 48, further comprising a communication apparatus configured to enable at least voice communication by a passenger with a remote monitoring station while the transport device is in operation.

77. A land-mobile personnel transport device configured to transport one or more persons from one location to another, comprising:

a passenger compartment; and

computerized information and display apparatus disposed at least partly within the passenger compartment, the information and display apparatus comprising;

a wireless network interface means;

processing means in data communication with the network interface for processing data;

display device means configured to be viewable by an occupant of the land-mobile apparatus during use for displaying information; and

computerized logic means configured to, when operated;

obtain digitized speech generated based on speech received from the occupant, the received speech comprising a request for desired information which the occupant wishes to obtain;

cause, based at least in part on the digitized speech, access of a remote network entity via the network interface to cause retrieval of the desired information; and

receive the desired information via the network interface means;

wherein the information and display apparatus is further configured to display at least a portion of the desired information on the display device means, the information received via the network interface means and selected based at least in part on the digitized speech; and

wherein the desired information comprises a map and visual directions to a particular organization or entity accessible by the transport device, the visual directions comprising at least a visually differentiated line or arrow showing a direction of travel from one location to the organization or entity via one or more pre-established travel infrastructure.
