1. A diagnostic device for detecting the presence of an analyte in a fluid sample, the device comprising:

  • a casing having a display;

    a light shield having;

    a first end and a second end,first and second longitudinal rails extending along the sides of the light shield between said first end and said second end;

    a recessed bottom portion of said light shield positioned between said first and second rails; and

    a first and a second passageway extending through said recessed bottom portion of said light shield, wherein said light shield is received in said casing;

    a lateral flow diagnostic strip having a region thereon positioned between said first and second longitudinal rails and directly above said first and second passageways through said recessed bottom portion of said light shield;

    a standoff adjacent to said first and second passageways elevating the lateral flow diagnostic strip above said recessed bottom portion of said light shield;

    a circuit board received in said casing coupled to a top portion of said light shield and positioned with respect to said light shield by one or more alignment pins extending through one or more openings in said circuit board;

    a processor mounted to said circuit board received in said casing;

    at least one light source mounted to said circuit board received in said casing adjacent said first passageway, said at least one light source being operatively coupled to said processor, said first passageway being configured to provide a direct line of sight from said at least one light source to said capture region; and

    at least one sensor mounted to said circuit board received in said casing adjacent said second passageway, said at least one sensor being operatively coupled to said processor,wherein said lateral flow diagnostic strip is positioned so that a gap exists between said lateral flow diagnostic strip and said first and said second passageways through said recessed bottom portion of said light shield.
