Abstract

Systems, methods and apparatus for generating, distributing, and using speech recognition models. A shared speech processing facility is used to support speech recognition for a wide variety of devices with limited capabilities including business computer systems, personal data assistants, etc., which are coupled to the speech processing facility via a communications channel, e.g., the Internet. Devices with audio capture capability record and transmit to the speech processing facility, via the Internet, digitized speech and receive speech processing services, e.g., speech recognition model generation and/or speech recognition services, in response. The Internet is used to return speech recognition models and/or information identifying recognized words or phrases. The speech processing facility can be used to provide speech recognition capabilities to devices without such capabilities and/or to augment a device'"'"'s speech processing capability. Voice dialing, telephone control and/or other services are provided by the speech processing facility in response to speech recognition results.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

accessing a contact record for a contact, wherein the content record includes a textual representation of a name of the contact;

obtaining an audio recording of the name of the contact;

generating an update to a speaker-dependent speech recognition model associated with the contact using the audio recording of the name of the contact; and

storing the speaker-dependent speech recognition model in association with the contact record.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein obtaining the audio recording comprises obtaining an audio recording of a user speaking the name of the contact.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein obtaining the audio recording comprises obtaining an audio recording of a machine speaking the name of the contact.

4. The method of claim 1, comprising:

after storing the speaker-dependent speech recognition model, receiving a spoken input; and

obtaining a result of performing speech recognition on the spoken input using the speaker-dependent speech recognition model.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the result comprises a transcription of the spoken input.

6. The method of claim 4, comprising performing a voice dialing operation using the result.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein obtaining a result of performing speech recognition on the spoken input comprises obtaining a result of performing speech recognition on a portion of the spoken input that corresponds to the name of the contact.

8. A system comprising:

one or more computers and one or more storage devices storing instructions that are operable, when executed by the one or more computers, to cause the one or more computers to perform operations comprising;

accessing a contact record for a contact, wherein the content record includes a textual representation of a name of the contact;

obtaining an audio recording of the name of the contact;

generating an update to a speaker-dependent speech recognition model associated with the contact using the audio recording of the name of the contact; and

storing the speaker-dependent speech recognition model in association with the contact record.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein obtaining the audio recording comprises obtaining an audio recording of a user speaking the name of the contact.

10. The system of claim 8, wherein obtaining the audio recording comprises obtaining an audio recording of a machine speaking the name of the contact.

11. The system of claim 8, wherein the operations comprise:

after storing the speaker-dependent speech recognition model, receiving a spoken input; and

obtaining a result of performing speech recognition on the spoken input using the speaker-dependent speech recognition model.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the result comprises a transcription of the spoken input.

13. The system of claim 11, wherein the operations comprise performing a voice dialing operation using the result.

14. The system of claim 8, wherein obtaining a result of performing speech recognition on the spoken input comprises obtaining a result of performing speech recognition on a portion of the spoken input that corresponds to the name of the contact.

15. A computer-readable storage device storing software comprising instructions executable by one or more computers which, upon such execution, cause the one or more computers to perform operations comprising:

accessing a contact record for a contact, wherein the content record includes a textual representation of a name of the contact;

obtaining an audio recording of the name of the contact;

generating an update to a speaker-dependent speech recognition model associated with the contact using the audio recording of the name of the contact; and

storing the speaker-dependent speech recognition model in association with the contact record.

16. The device of claim 15, wherein obtaining the audio recording comprises obtaining an audio recording of a user speaking the name of the contact.

17. The device of claim 15, wherein obtaining the audio recording comprises obtaining an audio recording of a machine speaking the name of the contact.

18. The device of claim 15, wherein the operations comprise:

after storing the speaker-dependent speech recognition model, receiving a spoken input; and

obtaining a result of performing speech recognition on the spoken input using the speaker-dependent speech recognition model.

19. The device of claim 18, wherein the result comprises a transcription of the spoken input.

20. The device of claim 18, wherein the operations comprise performing a voice dialing operation using the result.
