System and method for processing and displaying quantity information during user-configurable time periods

Abstract

A system and method for displaying quantity related information determined for a plurality of time periods are described. According to one method, a trader may define one or more time periods for which a trading application may determine traded quantities, traded buys, traded sells, or other quantity related information at a plurality of price levels during the defined time periods. The trading application may then graphically display the quantities for each time period in relation to the static axis of prices. The method further includes periodically updating the displayed traded quantity to reflect the quantity during the defined time period, where the quantity is updated based on subsequent market updates that are received from the exchange for the tradable object.

Claims

1. A method including:

receiving by a computing device market data;

determining by the computing device a plurality of buy traded quantities and a plurality of sell traded quantities for a first time period based on the received market data, wherein each buy traded quantity in the plurality of buy traded quantities is for a different price level of a plurality of price levels, wherein each sell traded quantity in the plurality of sell traded quantities is for a different price level of the plurality of price levels; and

displaying by the computing device a plurality of buy traded quantity indicators associated with the plurality of buy traded quantities and a plurality of sell traded quantity indicators associated with the plurality of sell traded quantities, wherein each of the plurality of buy traded quantity indicators and the plurality of sell traded quantity indicators is displayed in relation to the corresponding price level of the plurality of price levels.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the market data is received from an exchange.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein a buy traded quantity in the plurality of buy traded quantities is determined based on an order to buy being used to match an order to sell pending at a price level, wherein a sell traded quantity in the plurality of sell traded quantities is determined based on an order to sell being used to match an order to buy pending at a price level.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the first time period is user defined.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the first time period includes the current time.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of buy traded quantity indicators are a different color than the plurality of sell traded quantity indicators.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of buy traded quantity indicators and the plurality of sell traded quantity indicators are displayed as a bar graph.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the bar graph is a split bar graph.

9. The method of claim 7, further including displaying by the computing device a scale for the bar graph.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the plurality of buy traded quantity indicators and the plurality of sell traded quantity indicators includes a numerical value.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein, for each price level in the plurality of price levels, the corresponding buy traded quantity indicator and sell traded quantity indicator are displayed as subdivisions of an indicator for that price level.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of buy traded quantity indicators and the plurality of sell traded quantity indicators are displayed in relation to a price axis.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the price axis is part of a trading interface.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the plurality of buy traded quantity indicators and the plurality of sell traded quantity indicators are displayed in a column of the trading interface.

15. The method of claim 1, further including displaying by the computing device a total traded quantity indicator representing a total traded quantity for the first time period for one of one of the plurality of price levels and all of the plurality of price levels.

16. The method of claim 1, further including dynamically updating by the computing device the plurality of buy traded quantity indicators and the plurality of sell traded quantity indicators as market data is received during the first time period.

17. The method of claim 1, further including displaying by the computing device a second plurality of buy traded quantity indicators associated with a second plurality of buy traded quantities and a second plurality of sell traded quantity indicators associated with a second plurality of sell traded quantities, wherein the second plurality of buy traded quantities and the second plurality of sell traded quantities are for a second time period, wherein each buy traded quantity in the second plurality of buy traded quantities is for a different price level of a second plurality of price levels, wherein each sell traded quantity in the second plurality of sell traded quantities is for a different price level of the second plurality of price levels, wherein each of the second plurality of buy traded quantity indicators and the second plurality of sell traded quantity indicators is displayed in relation to the corresponding price level of the second plurality of price levels.

18. A computer readable medium having stored therein instructions executable by a processor, wherein the instructions are executable to:

receive market data;

determine a plurality of buy traded quantities and a plurality of sell traded quantities for a first time period based on the received market data, wherein each buy traded quantity in the plurality of buy traded quantities is for a different price level of a plurality of price levels, wherein each sell traded quantity in the plurality of sell traded quantities is for a different price level of the plurality of price levels; and

display a plurality of buy traded quantity indicators associated with the plurality of buy traded quantities and a plurality of sell traded quantity indicators associated with the plurality of sell traded quantities, wherein each of the plurality of buy traded quantity indicators and the plurality of sell traded quantity indicators is displayed in relation to the corresponding price level of the plurality of price levels.

19. The computer readable medium of claim 18, wherein the market data is received from an exchange.

20. The computer readable medium of claim 18, wherein a buy traded quantity in the plurality of buy traded quantities is determined based on an order to buy being used to match an order to sell pending at a price level, wherein a sell traded quantity in the plurality of sell traded quantities is determined based on an order to sell being used to match an order to buy pending at a price level.

21. The computer readable medium of claim 18, wherein the first time period is user defined.

22. The computer readable medium of claim 18, wherein the first time period includes the current time.

23. The computer readable medium of claim 18, wherein the plurality of buy traded quantity indicators are a different color than the plurality of sell traded quantity indicators.

24. The computer readable medium of claim 18, wherein the plurality of buy traded quantity indicators and the plurality of sell traded quantity indicators are displayed as a bar graph.

25. The computer readable medium of claim 24, wherein the bar graph is a split bar graph.

26. The computer readable medium of claim 24, wherein the instructions are further executable to display a scale for the bar graph.

27. The computer readable medium of claim 18, wherein at least one of the plurality of buy traded quantity indicators and the plurality of sell traded quantity indicators includes a numerical value.

28. The computer readable medium of claim 18, wherein, for each price level in the plurality of price levels, the corresponding buy traded quantity indicator and sell traded quantity indicator are displayed as subdivisions of an indicator for that price level.

29. The computer readable medium of claim 18, wherein the plurality of buy traded quantity indicators and the plurality of sell traded quantity indicators are displayed in relation to a price axis.

30. The computer readable medium of claim 29, wherein the price axis is part of a trading interface.

31. The computer readable medium of claim 30, wherein the plurality of buy traded quantity indicators and the plurality of sell traded quantity indicators are displayed in a column of the trading interface.

32. The computer readable medium of claim 18, wherein the instructions are further executable to display a total traded quantity indicator representing a total traded quantity for the first time period for one of one of the plurality of price levels and all of the plurality of price levels.

33. The computer readable medium of claim 18, wherein the instructions are further executable to dynamically update the plurality of buy traded quantity indicators and the plurality of sell traded quantity indicators as market data is received during the first time period.

34. The computer readable medium of claim 18, wherein the instructions are further executable to display a second plurality of buy traded quantity indicators associated with a second plurality of buy traded quantities and a second plurality of sell traded quantity indicators associated with a second plurality of sell traded quantities, wherein the second plurality of buy traded quantities and the second plurality of sell traded quantities are for a second time period, wherein each buy traded quantity in the second plurality of buy traded quantities is for a different price level of a second plurality of price levels, wherein each sell traded quantity in the second plurality of sell traded quantities is for a different price level of the second plurality of price levels, wherein each of the second plurality of buy traded quantity indicators and the second plurality of sell traded quantity indicators is displayed in relation to the corresponding price level of the second plurality of price levels.
