Abstract

Media objects, such as images or soundtracks, may be ranked according to a new class of metrics known as “interestingness.” These rankings may be based at least in part on the quantity of user-entered metadata concerning the media object, the number of users who have assigned metadata to the media object, access patterns related to the media object, and/or a lapse of time related to the media object.

Claims

1. An apparatus comprising:

a processor;

a memory;

a user assigned first metadata stored on said memory assigned to a media object from a user, wherein the assigning of the user assigned first metadata is based in part upon an identified number of users who have designated the media object as a favorite; and

logic stored on said memory and executed by said processor for scoring the media object to provide a relative ranking of the media object relative to other media objects, the scoring is based in part on a quantity of user-entered metadata assigned to the media object, is also based in part on how often the user assigned first metadata and a second metadata different from the user assigned first metadata are both assigned to the media object, and is also based in part on an access pattern related to the media object, the access pattern comprising a route the user took to access the media object.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the user-entered metadata comprises a member of the group consisting of:

tags, comments and annotations.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, further comprising logic for determining relevance of at least one tag to the media object based in part upon relevance input from the user, wherein the score is based in part on the relevance of the at least one tag to the media object.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the access pattern is based in part upon the number of click throughs of the media object.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the access pattern is based in part upon the number of views of the media object.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the logic for scoring is further operable to score a media object based in part on a lapse of time since the media object was uploaded.

7. An apparatus comprising:

a processor;

a memory;

a user-assigned first metadata stored on said memory assigned to a media object from a user, wherein the assigning of the user assigned first metadata is based in part upon a number of users who have designated the media object as a favorite; and

logic stored on said memory and executed by said processor for scoring the media object to provide a relative ranking of the media object relative to other media objects, the scoring is based in part upon a relationship between the user and a requester of the rank of the media object, is also based in part on how often the user assigned first metadata and a second metadata different from the user assigned first metadata are both assigned to the media object, and is also based in part on an access pattern related to the media object, the access pattern comprising a route the user took to access the media object.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the user is the poster of the media object.

9. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the apparatus is located at a server and the user is associated with a corresponding client.

10. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the logic for scoring is operable to score a first media object associated with the user based in part on a number of media objects commonly assigned a same type of metadata by the user and the requester of the rank.

11. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the logic for scoring is operable to score the media object associated with the user based in part on a number of media objects commonly designated as favorites by the user and the requester of the rank.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the media object is associated with metadata assigned by the user.

13. The apparatus of claim 11, further comprising logic for enabling the user to post the media object.

14. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the score is based in part on the user and the requester of the rank having a predefined relationship.

15. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the logic for scoring is operable to score the media object associated with the user based in part on a number of media objects commonly tagged by both the user and a second user.

16. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the media object is associated with metadata assigned by the user.

17. The apparatus of claim 15, further comprising logic for enabling the user to post the media object.

18. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the score is based in part on the user and the requester of the rank having a predefined relationship.

19. An apparatus comprising:

a processor;

a memory;

a user-assigned first metadata stored on said memory assigned to a media object from a user; and

logic stored on said memory and executed by said processor for scoring the media object to provide a relative ranking of the media object, wherein the scoring is based in part on a geographical location represented by the media object, based in part on how often the user assigned first metadata and a second metadata different from the user assigned first metadata are assigned to the media object,

based in part on a number of media objects associated with the geographical location that have been designated favorites by a requester of a ranking of the media object, and based in part on an access pattern related to the media object, the access pattern comprising a route the user took to access the media object.

20. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein the logic for scoring accepts a request for ranking of the media object by a first user, and the ranking is based in part on the geographical location being associated with a residence of the first user.

21. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein the logic for scoring accepts a request for ranking of the media object by a first user, the ranking is based in part on the geographical location being associated with a residence of a user having a predefined relationship with the first user.

22. A method comprising:

accepting, by a computing device, a user assigned first metadata assigned to a media object from a user, wherein the assigning of the user assigned first metadata is based in part upon a number of users who have designated the media object as a favorite; and

scoring, by the computing device, the media object to provide a relative ranking of the media object, the scoring is based in part on a quantity of user-entered metadata assigned to the media object relative to other media objects, based in part on how often the user assigned first metadata and a second metadata different from the user assigned first metadata are both assigned to the media object, and based in part on an access pattern related to the media object, the access pattern comprising a route the user took to access the media object.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the user-entered metadata comprises a member of the group consisting of:

tags, comments and annotations.

24. A method comprising:

accepting, by a computing device, a user assigned first metadata concerning a media object from a user, wherein the user assigned first metadata is based in part upon a number of users who have designated the media object as a favorite; and

scoring, by the computing device, the media object to provide a relative ranking of the media object, wherein the scoring is based in part on a number of users who have assigned metadata to the media object relative to other media objects, based in part on how often the user assigned first metadata and a second metadata different from the user assigned first metadata are both assigned to the media object, and based in part on an access pattern related to the media object, the access pattern comprising a route the user took to access the media object.

25. A method comprising:

accepting, by a computing device, a user assigned first metadata concerning a media object from a user, wherein the user assigned first metadata is based in part upon a number of users who have designated the media object as a favorite; and

scoring, by the computing device, the media object to provide a relative ranking of the media object, the scoring is based in part upon a relationship between the user and a second user who requests the rank of the media object, how often the user assigned first metadata and a second metadata different from the user assigned first metadata are both assigned to the media object, and an access pattern related to the media object, the access pattern comprising a route the user took to access the media object.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the user is the poster of the media object.

27. The method of claim 25, wherein scoring comprises scoring the at least one media object based at least in part on the identity of a user requesting the ranking.

28. The method of claim 25, wherein accepting and scoring occur at a server and each user is associated with a corresponding client.

29. The method of claim 25, wherein the scoring comprises scoring a first media object associated with a first user based at least in part on the number of media objects commonly assigned the same type of metadata by the first user and a second user.

30. The method of claim 25, wherein the scoring comprises scoring a first media object associated with a first user based at least in part on the number of media objects commonly designated as favorites by the first user and the second user.

31. The method of claim 30, wherein the first media object is associated with metadata assigned by the first user.

32. The method of claim 30, further comprising enabling the first user to post the first media object.

33. The method of claim 30, wherein the scoring is based at least in part on the first user and the second user having a predefined relationship.

34. The method of claim 25, wherein scoring comprises scoring a first media object associated with a first user based at least in part on the number of media objects commonly tagged by both the first user and a second user.

35. The method of claim 34, wherein the first media object is associated with metadata assigned by the first user.

36. The method of claim 34, further comprising enabling the first user to post the first media object.

37. The method of claim 34, wherein the scoring is based in part on the first user and the second user having a predefined relationship.

38. A method comprising:

accepting, by a computing device, a user assigned first metadata concerning a media object from a user; and

scoring, by the computing device, the media object to provide a relative ranking of the media object, wherein the scoring is based in part on a geographical location represented by the media object, how often a first metadatum and a second metadatum different from the first metadatum are both assigned to the media object, and an access pattern related to the media object, the access pattern comprising a route the user took to access the media object,

wherein the logic for scoring scores the media object based in part on a number of media objects associated with the geographical location that have been designated favorites by a requester of a ranking of the media object.

39. The method of claim 38, wherein scoring comprises accepting a request for ranking of the media object by a first user, and ranking is based in part on the geographical location being associated with a residence of the first user.

40. The method of claim 38, wherein the scoring comprises accepting a request for ranking of the media object by a first user, and the ranking is based in part on the geographical location being associated with a residence of a third user having a predefined relationship with the first user.

41. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium comprising program code for:

accepting a user assigned first metadata assigned to a media object from a user, wherein the assigning of the user assigned first metadata is based in part upon a number of users who have designated the media object as a favorite;

scoring the media object to provide a relative ranking of the media object, wherein the scoring is based in part on a quantity of the user-entered metadata assigned to the media object relative to other media objects, based in part on how often the user assigned first metadata and a second metadata different from the user assigned first metadata are both assigned to the media object, and an access pattern related to the media object, the access pattern comprising a route the user took to access the media object; and

causing display of a determined ranking of the media object.

42. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 41, wherein the user-entered metadata comprises a member of the group consisting of:

tags, comments and annotations.

43. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium comprising program code for:

accepting a user assigned first metadata concerning a media object from a user, wherein the user assigned first metadata is based in part upon a number of users who have designated the media object as a favorite;

scoring the media object to provide a relative ranking of the media object, wherein the scoring is based in part on a number of users who have assigned metadata to the media object relative to other media objects, based in part on how often the user assigned first metadata and a second metadata different from the user assigned first metadata are both assigned to the media object, and based in part on an access pattern related to the media object, the access pattern comprising a route the user took to access the media object; and

causing display of a determined ranking of the at least one media object.

44. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium comprising program code for:

accepting a user assigned first metadata concerning a media object from a user, wherein the accepting of the user assigned first metadata is based in part upon a number of users who have designated the at least one media object as a favorite;

scoring the media object to provide a relative ranking of the media object, wherein the scoring is based in part upon a relationship between a first user and a second user who requests the rank of the media object relative to other media objects, based in part on how often the user assigned first metadata and a second metadata different from the user assigned first metadata are both assigned to the at least one media object, and based in part on an access pattern related to the media object, the access pattern comprising a route the user took to access the media object; and

causing display of a determined ranking of the media object.

45. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 44, wherein the first user is the poster of the media object.

46. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 44, wherein the scoring comprises scoring the media object based in part on the identity of the user requesting the ranking.

47. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 44, wherein the accepting and scoring occur at a server and each user is associated with a corresponding client.

48. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 44, wherein the scoring comprises scoring a first media object associated with the first user based in part on the number of media objects commonly assigned the same type of metadata by the first user and the second user.

49. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 44, wherein the scoring comprises scoring a first media object associated with the first user based in part on the number of media objects commonly designated as favorites by the first user and the second user.

50. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 49, wherein the first media object is associated with metadata assigned by the first user.

51. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 49, further comprising enabling the first user to post the first media object.

52. The non-transitory computer readable storage of claim 49, wherein the scoring is based in part on the first user and the second user having a predefined relationship.

53. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 44, wherein the scoring comprises scoring a first media object associated with the first user based in part on a number of media objects commonly tagged by both the first user and a second user.

54. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 53, wherein the first media object is associated with metadata assigned by the first user.

55. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 53, further comprising enabling the first user to post the first media object.

56. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 53, wherein the scoring is based in part on the first user and the second user having a predefined relationship.

58. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 54, wherein the scoring comprises accepting a request for ranking of the media object by a first user, and the ranking is based in part on the geographical location being associated with a residence of the first user.

59. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 54, wherein the scoring comprises accepting a request for ranking of the media object by a first user, and the ranking is based in part on the geographical location being associated with a residence of a second user having a predefined relationship with the first user.

57. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium comprising program code for:

accepting a user assigned first metadata concerning a media object from a user;

scoring the media object to provide a relative ranking of the media object, wherein the scoring is based in part on a geographical location represented by the media object, based in part on how often the user assigned first metadata and a second metadata different from the user assigned first metadata are both assigned to the media object, and based in part on an access pattern related to the media object, the access pattern comprising a route the user took to access the media object; and

causing the display of a determined ranking of the media object,

wherein the scoring is based in part on a number of media objects associated with the geographical location that have been designated favorites by a requester of a ranking of the media object.
