Abstract

Methods and apparatus are provided herein for sensing rain fall for use in irrigation control. In one embodiment, a wireless rain sensor comprises a housing at least partially covering a first sensor, a controller and a wireless transmitter. The first sensor comprises a moisture absorptive material located to be contacted by rain fall and configured to expand in response to the contact with the rain fall and contract in response to an absence of the rain fall. The controller is coupled to the first sensor and configured to output signals corresponding to a variable amount of expansion and contraction of the moisture absorptive material. The wireless transmitter is configured to transmit wireless signals, at least one wireless signal comprising data corresponding to the variable amount of expansion and contraction of the moisture absorptive material.

Claims

1. A rain sensor comprising:

a moisture absorptive material configured to move in response to rain fall;

a plunger configured to move in response to and proportional to the movement of the moisture absorptive material;

a sensor element comprising;

a first element; and

a second element coupled to the plunger and configured to move with the plunger relative to the first element causing a change in a variable corresponding to the amount of rain; and

a controller configured to measure the variable and further configured to generate a signal comprising an indication of the amount of rain fall based on the variable.

2. The rain sensor of claim 1, wherein the first element is fixed in a location.

3. The rain sensor of claim 1, wherein the indication comprises the variable.

4. The rain sensor of claim 1, wherein the indication comprises a value representing the amount of rain fall generated based on the variable.

5. The rain sensor of claim 1, wherein the first element is a resistive element, and wherein the second element is a wiper in contact with the resistive element, and wherein the variable comprises resistance.

6. The rain sensor of claim 5, wherein the resistive element is fixed in a location, and wherein the wiper is moving.

7. The rain sensor of claim 1, wherein the first element is a first electrode and the second element is a second electrode and wherein the variable comprises a capacitance.

8. The rain sensor of claim 7, wherein the first electrode is fixed in a location, and wherein the second electrode is moving.

9. The rain sensor of claim 7, wherein an insulating material is located between the first electrode and the second electrode.

10. The rain sensor of claim 1, wherein the controller further comprises a transceiver configured to wirelessly transmit the signal to a remote device and further configured to receive at least a second signal from the remote device.

11. The rain sensor of claim 1, further comprising a temperature sensor coupled to the controller and configured to output signals corresponding to a variable air temperature.

12. The rain sensor of claim 1, wherein the moisture absorptive material comprises a plurality of hygroscopic disks.

13. The rain sensor of claim 1 further comprising a housing at least partially covering the moisture absorptive material, the plunger, the sensor element and the controller.

14. The rain sensor of claim 1 further comprising a wireless transmitter coupled to the controller and configured to transmit a wireless signal relating to the signal to a remote device.

15. The rain sensor of claim 1 further comprising a wireless transmitter coupled to the controller and configured to wirelessly transmit the signal to a remote device.

The rain sensor of claim 1 wherein the moisture absorptive material is located to be contacted by the rain fall such that the moisture absorptive material and the plunger are configured to expand in response to the contact with the rain fall and contract in response to an absence of the rain fall.

17. The rain sensor of claim 16 wherein the variable corresponding to the amount of rain corresponds to a variable amount of expansion and contraction of the moisture absorptive material.

18. The rain sensor of claim 16 further comprising a transmitter configured to transmit signals, at least one signal comprising data corresponding to the variable amount of the expansion and the contraction of the moisture absorptive material.

19. The rain sensor of claim 18 wherein the transmitter comprises a wireless transmitter.

20. The rain sensor of claim 18 wherein the transmitter transmits signals comprising the data corresponding to the variable amount of the expansion of the moisture absorptive material independent of the variable amount of expansion of the moisture absorptive material.

21. The rain sensor of claim 18 wherein the transmitter transmits signals comprising the data corresponding to the variable amount of the expansion of the moisture absorptive material independent of a rain fall threshold.

22. The rain sensor of claim 1 wherein there is no rain fall threshold set at the rain sensor.

23. The rain sensor of claim 1 further comprising a spring fixed at a first end and coupled at a second end to the plunger, wherein the spring is configured to cause the plunger to apply biasing pressure on the moisture absorptive material against expansion of the moisture absorptive material.

24. The rain sensor of claim 1 wherein the first element comprises a Hall Effect sensor and the second element comprises a magnet.

25. The rain sensor of claim 1 wherein the controller is configured to:

determine, based on at least the variable, a rate of expansion of the moisture absorptive material.

26. The rain sensor of claim 1 wherein the controller is configured to:

determine, based on at least the variable, a rate of contraction of the moisture absorptive material.

27. The rain sensor of claim 1 wherein the controller is configured to:

determine, based on at least the variable, a level of expansion of the moisture absorptive material corresponding to a threshold; and

take an action when the level of expansion meets the threshold.

28. The rain sensor of claim 1 wherein the controller is configured to:

determine, based on at least the variable, a level of contraction of the moisture absorptive material corresponding to a threshold; and

take an action when the level of contraction meets the threshold.

29. The rain sensor of claim 1 wherein the controller is configured to:

determine, based on at least the variable, when at least one of a first predefined threshold level of expansion of the moisture absorptive material and a second predefined threshold level of expansion of the moisture absorptive material has been met.

30. The rain sensor of claim 1 further comprising a control unit coupled to the controller and remote from the controller, the control unit configured to receive the indication of the amount of rain fall from the controller.

31. The rain sensor of claim 30 wherein the control unit is configured to determine, based on at least the indication, one of a rate of expansion of the moisture absorptive material and a rate of contraction of the moisture absorptive material.

The rain sensor of claim 30 wherein the control unit is configured to determine, based on at least the indication, one of a level of expansion of the moisture absorptive material corresponding to a first threshold and a level of contraction of the moisture absorptive material corresponding to a second threshold.

33. The rain sensor of claim 30 wherein the control unit is configured to determine, based on at least the indication, when at least one of a first predefined threshold level of expansion of the moisture absorptive material and a second predefined threshold level of expansion of the moisture absorptive material has been met.
