Abstract

Location-based services are provided in a communication system comprising a wireless network. In one aspect, a mobile user device sends a trigger message to a server over a wireless link of the network. The server in response to the trigger message sends an update message to the mobile user device over the wireless link. The update message is sent within a period of time after the trigger message that is less than a dormancy time of the wireless link. The update message may specify, for example, a defined area around a location identified in the trigger message, one or more stationary fences associated with the mobile user device that overlap with the defined area and that are active or become active within a designated time frame, and a projected time frame within which a proximity-crossing event is likely to occur for at least one user device pair that includes the mobile user device.

Claims

1. A method of providing location-based services to a mobile user device in a communication system, the method comprising the steps of:

receiving a trigger message from the mobile user device over a wireless link; and

sending an update message to the mobile user device over the wireless link responsive to the trigger message;

wherein the update message is sent within a period of time after receipt of the trigger message that is determined as a function of a dormancy time of the wireless link.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the receiving and sending steps are implemented at least in part in a server associated with a wireless network that provides the wireless link.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of receiving a confirmation message from the mobile user device over the wireless link indicating that the update message was received.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the confirmation message is received within a period of time after sending the update message that is less than the dormancy time of the wireless link.

5. The method of claim 1 further including the steps of determining if the trigger message contains one or more fence-crossing alerts, and for each such fence-crossing alert, determining if a corresponding fence is valid and if the fence is valid forwarding the alert to an application.

6. A processor-readable storage medium containing executable program code which when executed by a processor performs the steps of the method of claim 1.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the update message is sent within a period of time after receipt of the trigger message that is less than a dormancy time of the wireless link.

8. A method of providing location-based services to a mobile user device in a communication system, the method comprising the steps of:

receiving a trigger message from the mobile user device over a wireless link; and

sending an update message to the mobile user device over the wireless link responsive to the trigger message;

wherein the update message is sent within a period of time after receipt of the trigger message that is less than a dormancy time of the wireless link; and

wherein the method further includes the steps of;

defining an area around a location identified in the trigger message;

selecting stationary fences associated with the mobile user device that overlap with the defined area and that are active or become active within a designated time frame;

determining whether or not one or more proximity-crossing events have occurred with respect to the location and one or more moving fences of respective user device pairs that include the mobile user device; and

for a given proximity-crossing event that has occurred, sending a corresponding alert to an application.

9. The method of claim 8 further including the step of determining a projected time frame within which a proximity-crossing event is likely to occur for at least one user device pair that includes the mobile user device.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the update message includes the defined area, the selected stationary fences and the projected time frame.

11. An apparatus for use in providing location-based services to a mobile user device in a communication system, the apparatus comprising:

a processing device having a processor coupled to a memory;

wherein the processing device is configured to receive a trigger message from the mobile user device over a wireless link, and to send an update message to the mobile user device over the wireless link responsive to the trigger message;

wherein the update message is sent within a period of time after receipt of the trigger message that is determined as a function of a dormancy time of the wireless link.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the processing device comprises a server.

13. A method of obtaining location-based service updates in a mobile user device in a communication system, the method comprising the steps of:

sending a trigger message from the mobile user device over a wireless link; and

receiving an update message in the mobile user device over the wireless link responsive to the trigger message;

wherein the update message is received within a period of time after sending the trigger message that is determined as a function of a dormancy time of the wireless link.

14. The method of claim 13 further comprising the step of sending a confirmation message from the mobile user device over the wireless link indicating that the update message was received.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein the confirmation message is sent from the mobile user device within a period of time after receiving the update message that is less than the dormancy time of the wireless link.

16. A processor-readable storage medium containing executable program code which when executed by a processor performs the steps of the method of claim 13.

17. A method of obtaining location-based service updates in a mobile user device in a communication system, the method comprising the steps of:

sending a trigger message from the mobile user device over a wireless link; and

receiving an update message in the mobile user device over the wireless link responsive to the trigger message;

wherein the update message is received within a period of time after sending the trigger message that is less than a dormancy time of the wireless link; and

wherein the update message comprises a defined area around a location identified in the trigger message, one or more stationary fences associated with the mobile user device that overlap with the defined area and that are active or become active within a designated time frame, and a projected time frame within which a proximity-crossing event is likely to occur for at least one user device pair that includes the mobile user device.

18. The method of claim 17 further including the steps of:

performing periodic location probe operations to determine location of the mobile user device;

after performing a given location probe operation, evaluating if the mobile user device has crossed one of the stationary fences or a boundary of the defined area; and

if the mobile user device has crossed one of the stationary fences or the boundary of the defined area, sending an additional trigger message containing one or more corresponding fence-crossing alerts.

19. The method of claim 18 further including the steps of:

after performing a given location probe operation, updating the projected time frame; and

sending an additional trigger message after the updated projected time frame since receipt of the update message has elapsed.

20. The method of claim 18 further including the step of:

if the mobile user device has not crossed one of the stationary fences or the boundary of the defined area, sending an additional trigger message after expiration of a specified maximum time frame since receipt of the update message, or after the mobile user device has moved by more than a specified minimum spatial distance since receipt of the update message.

21. The method of claim 19 wherein the step of updating the projected time frame further comprises the steps of:

if an average speed s_avg of the mobile user device since receipt of the update message is less than a designated maximum speed s_max, updating the projected time frame in accordance with the following equation;

22. The method of claim 17 further including the step of sending an additional trigger message after the projected time frame since receipt of the update message has elapsed.

23. A mobile user device comprising:

a processor;

a memory coupled to the processor; and

a network interface coupled to the processor;

wherein the mobile user device is operative to send a trigger message over a wireless link, and to receive an update message over the wireless link responsive to the trigger message;

wherein the update message is received within a period of time after sending the trigger message that is determined as a function of a dormancy time of the wireless link.
