1. A computer system, comprising:

  • a server computer comprising communications electronics, a non-transient computer readable memory device, and a processor coupled to the communications electronics and the non-transient computer readable memory device;

    wherein the non-transient computer readable memory device comprises a database describing a plurality of ensembles for potential consumption by consumers, wherein each ensemble comprises a set of components which must be consumed by the consumers for the ensemble to be consumed, wherein the non-transient computer readable memory device further comprises a consumer inventory comprising branded or unbranded components in the possession of the consumer;

    wherein the non-transient computer readable memory device further comprises program code which, when executed by the processor, implements a method for implementing a collaborative auction, said method comprising;

    in response to communications received at the communications electronics, the processor generating a consumer selection defining characteristics of a consumer-desired ensemble;

    in response to communications received at the communications electronics, the processor generating a plurality of bids from a plurality of marketers, wherein each bid specifies a component and a price;

    said processor causing an output ensemble to be reported via the communications electronics to the consumer making the selection, wherein the output ensemble is reported without reference to component brand;

    said processor determining the output ensemble, wherein determining the output ensemble comprises;

    (i) said processor selecting a set of ensembles, from the plurality of ensembles, that meet;

    (a) the characteristics of the consumer-desired ensemble, and (b) for which the consumer inventory contains components and sufficient quantities of components to create the ensemble, wherein said processor ignores component brands in conducting the selection;

    (ii) said processor calculating a plurality of component bid totals by calculating a component bid total for each ensemble of the set of selected ensembles by;

    summing (a) a bid amount for a first specified component of the ensemble scaled by a quantity of the first specified component in the ensemble, and (b) a bid amount for a second specified component of the ensemble scaled by a quantity of the second specified component in the ensemble, wherein bids from at least two marketers of the plurality of marketers contribute to the component bid total; and

    prior to said summing, calculating the quantity of each specified component in the ensemble by determining a quantity of components required by the ensemble that are interchangeable with that specified component and weighting the quantity of interchangeable components by a function of a quantity of that specified component in the consumer'"'"'s inventory;

    (iii) in response to said calculating a plurality of component bid totals, said processor selecting the output ensemble from the set of selected ensembles, wherein the component bid total of the output ensemble is greater than every other component bid total of the plurality of component bid totals.
