Abstract

A method for operating a medical fluid machine, the method comprising: (i) if alternating current (“AC”) power is available, charging a battery, if needed, and powering the medical fluid machine with the AC power; and (ii) if AC power is not available (a) if fuel cell power is available, charging the battery, if needed, and powering the medical fluid machine with the fuel cell power; and (b) if fuel cell power is not available, powering the medical fluid machine using battery power until the AC power or fuel cell power is available.

Claims

1. A method for operating a medical fluid machine, the method comprising:

(i) if alternating current (“

AC”

) power is available, charging a battery, if needed, and powering the medical fluid machine with the AC power; and

(ii) if AC power is not available

(a) if fuel cell power from a fuel cell is available, charging the battery, if needed, and powering the medical fluid machine with the fuel cell power; and

(b) if fuel cell power is not available, powering the medical fluid machine and the fuel cell using battery power from the battery until the AC power or fuel cell power is available.

2. The method of claim 1, which includes sizing the medical fluid machine so as to be worn by a patient.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the medical fluid machine is a peritoneal dialysis machine or a hemodialysis machine.

4. The method of claim 1, which includes converting the AC power to direct current (“

DC”

) power if the AC power is available, charging the battery and powering the medical fluid machine using DC power created from the AC power.

5. The method of claim 4, which includes reducing power to a heating element if the heating element would receive more power than needed.

6. The method of claim 1, which includes

generating electricity from the fuel cell power, the AC power or the battery power;

and

storing the electricity for use with the medical fluid machine.

7. The method of claim 6, which includes storing the electricity in a capacitor.

8. The method of claim 1, which includes automatically detecting if AC power is available for determining between (i) and (ii).

9. The method of claim 1, which includes automatically detecting if fuel cell power is available for determining between (a) and (b).

10. A method for operating a medical fluid machine, the method comprising:

detecting if alternating current (“

AC”

) power is available;

detecting if fuel cell power from a fuel cell is available;

detecting if battery power is available;

powering the medical fluid machine using AC power if AC power is available;

powering the medical fluid machine using fuel cell power if only fuel cell and battery power are available; and

powering the medical machine and the fuel cell using battery power if only battery power is available.

11. The method of claim 10, which includes automatically detecting if AC power is available.

12. The method of claim 10, which includes automatically detecting if fuel cell power is available.

13. The method of claim 10, which includes automatically detecting if battery power is available.

14. The method of claim 10, which includes using the AC power to charge a battery, if needed, for providing the battery power.

15. The method of claim 10, wherein using the AC power to power the medical fluid machine includes converting the AC power to direct current (“

DC”

) power.

16. A method for supplying power to a medical fluid machine, the method comprising:

(i) if utility power is available, charging a battery, if needed, and powering the medical fluid machine with the utility power; and

(ii) if utility power is not available

(a) if fuel cell power is available, powering the medical fluid machine with the fuel cell power; and

(b) if fuel cell power is not available, generating secondary power from the battery and supplying the secondary power to the medical fluid machine and to a fuel cell to generate fuel cell power.

17. The method of claim 16, which includes using a transformer for powering the medical fluid machine with the utility power.

18. The method of claim 16, which includes using an inverter/charger circuit for generating the secondary power from the battery.
