1. A method of quantifying unread content items, comprising:
- at a computing system having one or more processors and memory storing one or more program for execution by the one or more processors;
for a stream subscribed to by a user, wherein the stream comprises a time-ordered set of content items;
determining, for display to the user, a numeric count of content items in the stream having an unread status in accordance with read state information stored for the user with respect to the stream,wherein determining the numeric count for display to the user comprises;
excluding, from the numeric count, regardless of actual read status, items in the time-ordered set in accordance with a first predefined depth limit and a first subscription timestamp,wherein the first predefined depth limit specifies a threshold total number of content items, included in the content items, provided by a content feed associated with the stream; and
wherein the first subscription timestamp specifies a time when the user subscribed to a source providing content items to the stream; and
formatting for display to the user the numeric count of content items in the stream having the unread status.

Abstract
A method quantifies unread content items for a stream subscribed to by a user. The stream includes a time-ordered list of content items from two or more content feeds. Each content feed includes a set of content items published by a respective publication source. The method includes determining a count of content items having an unread status in accordance with read state information stored for the user with respect to the stream, and transmitting the count to a client system for display.

1. A method of quantifying unread content items, comprising:
-
at a computing system having one or more processors and memory storing one or more program for execution by the one or more processors; for a stream subscribed to by a user, wherein the stream comprises a time-ordered set of content items; determining, for display to the user, a numeric count of content items in the stream having an unread status in accordance with read state information stored for the user with respect to the stream, wherein determining the numeric count for display to the user comprises;
excluding, from the numeric count, regardless of actual read status, items in the time-ordered set in accordance with a first predefined depth limit and a first subscription timestamp,wherein the first predefined depth limit specifies a threshold total number of content items, included in the content items, provided by a content feed associated with the stream; and wherein the first subscription timestamp specifies a time when the user subscribed to a source providing content items to the stream; and formatting for display to the user the numeric count of content items in the stream having the unread status. - View Dependent Claims (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8)

9. A system for quantifying unread content items in a stream subscribed to by a user, wherein the stream comprises a time-ordered set of content items, comprising:
-
memory; one or more processors; one or more programs stored in the memory and configured for execution by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including; instructions for determining, for display to a user, a numeric count of content items in the stream having an unread status in accordance with read state information stored for the user with respect to the stream, the determining the numeric count for display to the user comprising; excluding, from the numeric count, regardless of actual read status, items in the time-ordered set in accordance with a first predefined depth limit and a first subscription timestamp, wherein the first predefined depth limit specifies a threshold total number of content items, included in the content items, provided by a content feed associated with the stream; and wherein the first subscription timestamp specifies a time when the user subscribed to a source providing content items to the stream; and instructions for formatting for display to the user the numeric count of content items in the stream having the unread status. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16)

17. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing one or more programs for use in quantifying unread content items in a stream subscribed to by a user, wherein the stream comprises a time-ordered set of content items, the one or more programs configured to be executed by a computer system and comprising:
-
instructions for determining, for display to a user, a numeric count of content items in the stream having an unread status in accordance with read state information stored for the user with respect to the stream, the determining the numeric count for display to the user comprising; excluding, from the numeric count, regardless of actual read status, items in the time-ordered set in accordance with a first predefined depth limit and a first subscription timestamp, wherein the first predefined depth limit specifies a threshold total number of content items, included in the content items, provided by a content feed associated with the stream; and wherein the first subscription timestamp specifies a time when the user subscribed to a source providing content items to the stream; and instructions for formatting for display to the user the numeric count of content items in the stream having the unread status. - View Dependent Claims (18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24)
