Abstract

Vitrectomy probes and systems related thereto are disclosed herein. There are various example vitrectomy probes having an adjustable cutting port size. Various example features are described for adjusting the size of the cutting port. Further, there are examples included herein for adjusting the size of the cutter port while the vitrectomy probe is in operation.

Claims

1. A vitrectomy probe comprising:

a housing;

a cutter extending longitudinally from a first end of the housing, the cutter comprising;

an outer cutting member coupled to the housing;

an interior assembly comprising an inner cutting member slideable within the outer cutting member, the interior assembly slideable between a retracted position and an extended position; and

an adjustable port, a size of the adjustable port defined by an edge of an opening formed in the outer cutting member and an end surface of the inner cutting member when the inner cutting member is in a fully retracted position;

an oscillator operable to reciprocate the interior assembly;

a stroke limiter operable to limit the size of the adjustable port, the stroke limiter comprising;

an inclined plane disposed proximate an end of the interior assembly, the inclined plane moveable transversely relative to the interior assembly and configured to engage the end of the interior assembly to define the size of the adjustable port.

The vitrectomy probe of claim 1, wherein the stroke limiter further comprises a first level surface at a first end of the inclined plane and a second level surface at a second end of the inclined plane, wherein the first level surface is configured to contact the end of the interior assembly to define a minimum size of the adjustable port, and wherein the second level surface is configured to contact the end of the interior assembly to define a maximum size of the adjustable port.

3. The vitrectomy probe of claim 1, wherein the stroke limiter further comprises a groove formed in the inclined plane.

4. The vitrectomy probe of claim 3, wherein the groove is configured to receive the end of the interior assembly.

5. The vitrectomy probe of claim 1, wherein the stroke limiter further comprises a motor operable to move the inclined plane in a direction transverse to a longitudinal axis of the interior assembly.

6. The vitrectomy probe of claim 5, wherein the motor is a piezoelectric motor.

7. The vitrectomy probe of claim 1 further comprising an interior assembly, wherein the interior assembly further comprises:

an extension; and

a hollow coupling joining the inner cutting member and the extension, and

wherein a portion of the extension forms the end of the interior assembly.

8. The vitrectomy probe of claim 7, further comprising a conduit coupled to the interior assembly, wherein the conduit defines a passage in communication with an interior of the hollow coupling.

9. The vitrectomy probe of claim 8, wherein the passage is configured to evacuate aspirant from the interior assembly.

10. The vitrectomy probe of claim 1, wherein the stroke limiter further comprises a piston coupled to the inclined plane, wherein the piston is disposed in a cylinder formed in the housing, wherein the inclined plane is moved in a first direction transverse to the interior assembly in response to pneumatic pressure applied to the piston.

11. The vitrectomy probe of claim 10, further comprising a biasing member, wherein the biasing member is operable to bias the stroke limiter in a second direction.

12. The vitrectomy probe of claim 11, wherein the second direction is a direction opposite the first direction.

13. A vitrectomy probe comprising:

a cutter comprising;

an outer cutting member;

an interior assembly comprising an inner cutting member, the interior assembly slideable between a retracted position and an extended position; and

an adjustable port, a size of the adjustable port defined by an edge of an opening formed in the outer cutting member and an end surface of the inner cutting member when the inner cutting member is in a fully refracted position;

a motor operable to reciprocate the inner cutting member relative to the outer cutting member;

a stroke limiter moveable relative to the interior assembly in a direction having a component that is transverse to a longitudinal axis of the interior assembly, the stroke limiter operable to limit the size of the adjustable port and comprising;

an inclined plane disposed proximate an end of the interior assembly, the inclined plane moveable in a direction having transverse component relative to the interior assembly and configured to engage the end of the interior assembly to define the size of the adjustable port.

14. The vitrectomy probe of claim 13, wherein the interior assembly further comprises an extension coupled to the inner cutting member.

15. The vitrectomy probe of claim 14, wherein the stroke limiter further comprises a hollow coupling defining a cavity and wherein the inner cutting member comprises a lumen in communication with the cavity.

16. The vitrectomy probe of claim 14, further comprising a conduit defining a passage, the passage in communication with the cavity.

17. The vitrectomy probe of claim 13, wherein the stroke limiter further comprises a motor operable to move the inclined plane relative to the interior assembly.

18. The vitrectomy probe of claim 17, wherein the motor comprises a piezoelectric motor.

19. The vitrectomy probe of claim 17, further comprising a biasing element, wherein the stroke limiter further comprises a piston, wherein the biasing element biases the stroke limiter in a first direction, and wherein a pneumatic pressure applied to the piston biases the stroke limiter in a second direction opposite the first direction.

20. The vitrectomy probe of claim 13, wherein the stroke limiter further comprises a groove formed in the inclined plane and wherein the end of the interior assembly is configured to be received into the groove.
