Abstract

Techniques are described for detecting lead-related conditions for implantable electrical leads. In some of the described embodiments, an implantable electrical lead assembly is provided with a coupling member for connecting a conductor and associated insulator(s) to an electrode/sensing element. The implantable medical device controls and performs a measurement of an electrical property of the electrical lead during periods when the conductor is decoupled from the electrode/sensing element. An indication of a lead-related condition is derived based on the measured electrical property. The lead-related condition may be associated with an insulator of a lead body of the electrical lead.

Claims

1. An implantable medical system, comprising:

an implantable medical lead, including;

a lead body having an insulator, a first conductor and a second, wherein the first and second conductors are disposed at least partially within the insulator;

an electrode; and

means for selective coupling of the first conductor, wherein the means for selective coupling selectively;

couples the first conductor to the electrode and decouples the first conductor from the second conductor in a first configuration, and

couples the first conductor to the second conductor to define a test pathway and decouples the first conductor from the electrode in a second configuration;

an implantable medical device (IMD), including measurement circuitry configured to obtain an indication of a lead-related condition associated with the test pathway of the lead body, wherein the measurement circuitry controls the means for selective coupling selectively to operate in the first configuration and the second configuration.

2. The implantable medical system of claim 1, wherein the measurement circuitry, comprises:

means for discharging an electrical charge through the lead body; and

means for measuring an electrical property of the lead body in response to the electrical charge.

3. The implantable medical system of claim 2, wherein the measured electrical property is an impedance of the insulator.

4. The medical electrical lead-electrode system of claim 2, wherein the measurement circuitry issues a control signal to control the decoupling of the means for selectively coupling from the electrode prior to measurement of the electrical property.

5. The implantable medical system of claim 2, wherein the measured electrical property is an impedance of the conductor.

6. The implantable medical system of claim 5, wherein the IMD detects an insulation defect responsive to the impedance of the conductor exceeding a threshold value.

7. The medical electrical lead-electrode system of claim 1, wherein the means for selective coupling of the first conductor disconnects the first conductor from the electrode to directly connect a first distal end of the first conductor to a second distal end of the second conductor.

8. The implantable medical system of claim 7, further comprising a housing, wherein the test pathway for obtaining the indication of the lead-related condition is defined between the housing and the first and second conductors.

9. The implantable medical system of claim 1, wherein the measurement circuitry, comprises:

means for discharging an electrical charge through the lead body triggered by the decoupling of the first conductor from the electrode; and

means for sensing at the IMD for a potential difference within the lead body in response to the discharged electrical charge.

10. The medical electrical lead-electrode system of claim 1, wherein the means for selective coupling comprises a switch.

11. The medical electrical lead-electrode system of claim 1, wherein the isolating means for selective coupling comprises a multiplexer.
