Abstract

A computer readable media and computing device for computing and displaying a path trajectory and an aim point icon for directing a putted golf ball from a starting point on a golf course to a target point based on pre-computed putting data for the putting green is provided. The aim point icon is graphically displayed on a visual representation of the putting green at an aim point distance perpendicular to the left or right of the target location, the aim point distance representing a location on the putting green for properly aiming a putt in order to propel the golf ball from the start position to the desired target location.

Claims

1. A non-transitory computer readable media containing program instructions for providing putting information when executed by a processor of a computing device, the program instructions comprising computer program code for:

receiving by the computing device a start position of a golf ball relative to the putting green and a desired target location relative to the putting green;

determining by the processor of the computing device a path trajectory for the start position and the desired target location based on pre-computed putting data for the putting green;

outputting to a display a graphical representation of the determined path trajectory on a visual representation of the putting green; and

outputting to the display a putting parameter for propelling the golf ball from the start position to the target location based the determined path trajectory, wherein the putting parameter comprises an aim point icon graphically displayed on the visual representation of the putting green at an aim point distance perpendicular to the left or right of the target location, the aim point distance representing a location on the putting green for properly aiming a putt in order to propel the golf ball from the start position to the desired target location.

The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 1, further comprising computer program code for calculating by the processor and displaying on the display one or more indicia indicative of a slope direction, slope magnitude, a difficulty of an attempt to propel the golf ball from the start position to the target location, an aim angle, and an initial putt velocity.

3. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 1, wherein the pre-computed putting data for the putting green is derived from topography information corresponding to a particular putting green wherein the topography has been converted into a three dimensional surface model.

4. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 3, wherein the pre-computed putting data for the putting green comprises a plurality of predicted putt paths for all or part of the putting green.

The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 4, wherein the plurality of predicted putt paths are derived from a simulation that comprises rolling of a golf ball on the three dimensional surface model, wherein each of the predicted putt paths represent a successful putt based on a variety of initial conditions used in the simulation.

The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 5, wherein the variety of initial conditions comprise one or more of capture velocity, green speed, grain, starting and ending ball positions, such that different initial conditions provide different predicted putt paths that represent successful putts.

7. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 4, wherein the computer program code for determining the path trajectory comprises:

finding a substantially corresponding trajectory from the plurality of predicted putt paths for the start position, the target position, and received current initial conditions, and

selecting or selecting and averaging optimal values from grid points on the green closest to the start position.

The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 7, further comprising computer program code for receiving the current initial conditions, wherein the received current initial conditions comprise one or more of a desired capture velocity of the ball, a directional velocity of the ball, a green speed, and a grain.

9. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 4, wherein the pre-computed putting data for the putting green comprises pre-computed aim point distances for the plurality of predicted putt paths.

The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 1, wherein the putting parameter comprises an alternate aim point based on an initial break coordinate along the path trajectory wherein the ball is calculated to break, comprising a distance perpendicular to the left or right of the initial break coordinates, thereby allowing a closer point along the putting distance to aim.

The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 1 wherein computer program code for receiving a position of a golf ball as the start position or receiving a hole location as the desired target location further comprise computer program code for receiving one or more of global positioning data, radio frequency data, optical data, laser data, or manual input by a user.

12. A computing device for providing putting information, comprising:

input mechanism for receiving a start position of a golf ball relative to the putting green and a desired target location relative to the putting green;

a processor for executing code devices adapted to determine a path trajectory for the start position and the desired target location based on the pre-computed putting data for the putting green;

a display driven by an output of the processor for displaying a graphical representation of the determined path trajectory on a visual representation of the putting green and for displaying a putting parameter for propelling the golf ball from the start position to the target location based the determined path trajectory, wherein the putting parameter comprises an aim point icon graphically displayed on the visual representation of the putting green at an aim point distance perpendicular to the left or right of the target location, the aim point distance representing a location on the putting green for properly aiming a putt in order to propel the golf ball from the start position to the desired target location.

13. The computing device of claim 12, further comprising a non-transitory storage media for storing the pre-computed putting data for the putting green.

14. The computing device of claim 12, wherein the pre-computed putting data for the putting green is derived from topography information corresponding to a particular putting green wherein the topography has been converted into a three dimensional surface model.

15. The computing device of claim 14, wherein the pre-computed putting data for the putting green comprises a plurality of predicted putt paths for all or part of the putting green.

16. The computing device of claim 15, wherein the plurality of predicted putt paths are derived from a simulation that comprises rolling of a golf ball on the three dimensional surface model, wherein each of the predicted putt paths represent a successful putt based on a variety of initial conditions used in the simulation.

17. The computing device of claim 16, wherein the variety of initial conditions comprise one or more of capture velocity, green speed, grain, starting and ending ball positions, such that different initial conditions provide different predicted putt paths that represent successful putts.

18. The computing device of claim 15, wherein the processor determines the path trajectory by:

finding a substantially corresponding trajectory from the plurality of predicted putt paths for the start position, the target position, and received current initial conditions, and

selecting or selecting and averaging optimal values from grid points on the green closest to the start position.

The computing device of claim 12, wherein the input mechanism is further adapted to receive the current initial conditions for use by the processor in determining the path trajectory, wherein the received current initial conditions comprise one or more of a desired capture velocity of the ball, a directional velocity of the ball, a green speed, and a grain.

20. The computing device of claim 12, wherein the pre-computed putting data for the putting green comprises pre-computed aim point distances for the plurality of predicted putt paths.
