Abstract

A fuel cell is provided with an anode and a cathode. The anode is in electrical communication with an anode enzyme and the cathode is in electrical communication with a cathode enzyme. The anode enzyme is preferably an oxidase or a dehydrogenase. The cathode enzyme is a copper-containing enzyme, such as a lacasse, an ascorbate oxidase, a ceruloplasmine, or a bilirubin oxidase. Preferably, the cathode enzyme is operable under physiological conditions. Redox polymers serve to wire the anode enzyme to the anode and the cathode enzyme to the cathode. The fuel cell can be very small in size because it does not require a membrane, seal, or case. The fuel cell can be used in connection with a biological system, such as a human, as it may operate at physiological conditions. By virtue of its size and operability at physiological conditions, the fuel cell is of particular interest for applications calling for a power source implanted in a human body, such as a variety of medical applications.

Claims

1. A fuel cell comprising:

an anode comprising a first redox polymer and a first enzyme disposed on the surface of the anode for electrooxidizing an analyte and delivering electrons at the anode to generate a current;

a cathode comprising a second redox polymer and a second enzyme disposed on the surface of the cathode; and

an electrically insulating separator positioned between and in contact with the anode and cathode, wherein the insulating separator is capable of being penetrated by blood or interstitial fluid,

wherein the anode and the cathode are in electrical communication.

2. The fuel cell of claim 1, wherein the second enzyme is a copper-containing enzyme.

3. The fuel cell of claim 2, wherein the second enzyme comprises four copper ions per functional unit thereof.

4. The fuel cell of claim 1, wherein the second enzyme is laccase, ascorbate oxidase, ceruloplasmine, or bilirubin oxidase.

5. The fuel cell of claim 1, wherein each of the potential differences between the anode and the first redox polymer, the first redox polymer and the first enzyme, the cathode and the second redox polymer, the second redox polymer and the second enzyme, is from about 10 mV to about 200 mV.

6. The fuel cell of claim 1, wherein the cathode comprises platinum.

7. The fuel cell of claim 1, wherein the cathode comprises carbon.

8. The fuel cell of claim 1, wherein the first enzyme is a glucose-responsive enzyme.

9. The fuel cell of claim 8, wherein the glucose-responsive enzyme is glucose oxidase or glucose dehydrogenase.

10. The fuel cell of claim 1, wherein the first redox polymer comprises at least one redox mediator.

11. The fuel cell of claim 10, wherein the redox mediator comprises ruthenium or osmium.

12. The fuel cell of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the fuel cell is configured to be positioned subcutaneously in a subject.

13. The fuel cell of claim 1, wherein the anode is positioned on a first side of the electrically insulating separator and the cathode is positioned on an opposite side of the electrically insulating separator from the anode.

14. The fuel cell of claim 1, further comprising a substrate, wherein the anode and cathode are positioned coplanar on a substrate.

15. The fuel cell of claim 4, wherein the second enzyme is an enzyme selected from the group consisting of ascorbate oxidase, a ceruloplasmine and a bilirubin oxidase.
