Abstract

A laser and amplifier combination delivers a sequence of optical pulses at a predetermined pulse-repetition frequency PRF. An interferometer generates a signal representative of the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of the pulses at intervals corresponding to the PRF. The signal includes frequency components from DC to the PRF. The signal is divided into high and low frequency ranges. The high and low frequency ranges are sent to independent high frequency and low frequency control electronics, which drive respectively a high-frequency CEP controller and a low frequency controller for stabilizing the CEP of pulses in the sequence.

Claims

1. A laser system comprising:

a laser generating modelocked pulses;

a stretcher for stretching the modelocked pulses;

an optical amplifier for amplifying the modelocked pulses;

a pulse compressor for compressing the amplified pulses;

a detector for measuring the carrier envelope phase of the compressed pulses and generating an output signal corresponding thereto;

a first controller generating a first feedback signal in response to changes in the output signal, said first feedback signal for controlling the modelocked laser, said first feedback signal having a first frequency range; and

a second controller for generating a second feedback signal in response to changes in the output signal, said second feedback signal having a second frequency range lower than the first frequency range, said second feedback signal for controlling one of the pulse stretcher or pulse compressor.

2. A laser system as recited in claim 1 wherein the output signal from the detector is supplied to a frequency splitter for dividing the signal into the first and second feedback signals.

3. A laser system as recited in claim 1 wherein the output signal from the detector is divided into two portions, each portion being passed through a separate frequency filter to create the first and second feedback signals.

4. A laser system as recited in claim 3 wherein the first frequency range and the second frequency range overlap.

5. A laser system as recited in claim 1 wherein the pulse stretcher or pulse compressor receiving the second feedback signal includes at least one grating and wherein the angle of the grating is adjusted in response to the second feedback signal.

6. A laser system as recited in claim 1 wherein the pulse stretcher or pulse compressor receiving the second feedback signal includes a pair of spaced apart gratings and wherein the spacing between the gratings is adjusted in response to the second feedback signal.

7. The laser system as recited in claim 1 wherein the modelocked laser includes an optical cavity pumped by pump-beam delivered by a pump-laser that passes through a variable modulator prior to entering the cavity and wherein the first feedback signal is supplied the variable modulator.

8. The laser system as recited in claim 1 wherein the variable modulator is an acousto-optic modulator.

9. A laser system comprising:

a laser generating modelocked pulses;

a stretcher for stretching the modelocked pulses;

an optical amplifier for amplifying the modelocked pulses;

a pulse compressor for compressing the amplified pulses;

a detector for measuring the carrier envelope phase (CEP) of the compressed pulses and generating an output signal corresponding thereto;

a first controller generating a first feedback signal in response to changes in the output signal, said first feedback signal for controlling the CEP of the pulses delivered from the modelocked laser to the optical amplifier, the first feedback signal having a first frequency range; and

a second controller for generating a second feedback signal in response to changes in the output signal, said second feedback signal for controlling one of the pulse stretcher or pulse compressor, said second feedback signal having a second frequency range lower than the first frequency range, said second feedback signal controlling the CEP of the compressed pulses.

10. A laser system as recited in claim 9 wherein the output signal from the detector is supplied to frequency splitter for dividing the signal into the first and second feedback signals.

11. A laser system as recited in claim 9 wherein the output signal from the detector is divided into two portions, each portion being passed through a separate frequency filter to create the first and second feedback signals.

12. A laser system as recited in claim 11 wherein the first frequency range and the second frequency range overlap.

13. A laser system as recited in claim 9 wherein the pulse stretcher or pulse compressor receiving the second feedback signal includes at least one grating and wherein the angle of the grating is adjusted in response to the second feedback signal.

14. A laser system as recited in claim 9 wherein the pulse stretcher or pulse compressor receiving the second feedback signal includes a pair of spaced apart gratings and wherein the spacing between the gratings is adjusted in response to the second feedback signal.

15. The laser system as recited in claim 9 wherein the modelocked laser includes an optical cavity pumped by pump-beam delivered by a pump-laser that passes through a variable modulator prior to entering the cavity and wherein the first feedback signal is supplied the variable modulator.

16. A method of operating a laser system including a modelocked laser generating laser pulses that are is supplied to a stretcher, followed by an amplifier and followed by a compressor, said method comprising:

monitoring the carrier envelope phase (CEP) of the pulses exiting the compressor and generating an output signal corresponding thereto;

creating separate first and second feedback signals based on the monitored CEP, said first and second feedback signals having respectively first and second frequency ranges with the first frequency range being higher in frequency than the second frequency range;

adjusting the CEP of the modelocked laser based on the first feedback signal; and

supplying the second feedback signal to one of the stretcher or compressor to adjust the CEP of the compressed pulses.

17. A method as recited in claim 16 wherein said first and second feedback signals are created by a frequency splitter.

18. A method as recited in claim 16 the output signal is divided into two portions, each portion being passed through a separate frequency filter to create the first and second feedback signals.

19. A method as recited in claim 18 wherein the first frequency range and the second frequency range overlap.

20. A method as recited in claim 16 wherein the pulse stretcher or pulse compressor receiving the second feedback signal includes at least one grating and wherein the angle of the grating is adjusted in response to the second feedback signal.

21. A method as recited in claim 16 wherein the pulse stretcher or pulse compressor receiving the second feedback signal includes a pair of spaced apart gratings and wherein the spacing between the gratings is adjusted in response to the second feedback signal.

22. A method as recited in claim 16 wherein the modelocked laser includes an optical cavity pumped by pump-beam delivered by a pump-laser that passes through a variable modulator prior to entering the cavity and wherein the first feedback signal is supplied the variable modulator.
