Safety feature to disable an electronic device when a wireless implantable medical device (IMD) is proximate
First Claim
1. A method for prohibiting interference with operation of an implanted medical device (IMD) comprising:
- in response to performance of a function by an electronic device, detecting of an implanted medical device (IMD) of an implantee within an effective proximity to the electronic device by an IMD safety control module coupled with the electronic device, wherein performance of the function by the electronic device is known to have a potential to cause at least one adverse effect to at least one of a treatment provided by the implanted medical device and operation of the implanted medical device within the effective proximity, wherein the implanted medical device is an active implanted medical device having wireless communication capabilities;
disabling performance of the function by the electronic device;
requesting resolution from an operator of the electronic device to accommodate the implanted medical device detected within the effective proximity; and
upon receipt of said resolution, enabling performance of the function by the electronic device.

Abstract
An implanted medical device can be detected within an effective proximity of an electronic device by an IMD safety control module coupled with the electronic device, in response to the performance of a function by the electronic device. Performance of the function by the electronic device can be known to have the potential to cause adverse effects to operation of and/or a treatment provided by the implanted medical device within the effective proximity. The implanted medical device can be an active implanted medical device having wireless communication capabilities. Performance of the function by the electronic device can be disabled. Resolution from an operator of the electronic device can be requested. Upon receipt of the resolution, performance of the function by the electronic device can be enabled.

12. A system for minimizing adverse effects to an implanted medical device caused by an electronic device comprising:
-
an electronic device having at least one function whose performance is known to have a potential to cause at least one adverse effect to at least one of a treatment provided by an implanted medical device (IMD) and operation of the implanted medical device, wherein the implanted medical device is embedded within a living body, herein referred to as an implantee, wherein said at least one adverse effect occurs when the implantee is within an effective proximity of the electronic device, wherein the implanted medical device includes wireless communication capabilities; and an IMD safety control coupled to the electronic device configured to disable performance of the at least one function while the implantee is within the effective proximity when the at least one function is activated and enable performance of the at least one function upon resolution by an operator of the electronic device, wherein said IMD safety control is capable of wireless communication with the implanted medical device. - View Dependent Claims (13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18)
