Abstract

A method for searching for a media item portion and utilizing a database of media item portion entries. In one aspect, the database entry comprises a data container. In another aspect, the media item portion entries may be used to identify media item portions used in creating composite media items.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

communicating, via a network, with a database comprising plural data containers, each data container comprising metadata associated with a respective media item portion, the respective media item portion being a portion or component of a media item and not the entire media item, the metadata of the media item portion satisfying a predetermined minimum requirement based on whether a specific amount and a specific type of metadata associated with the media item is present within each data container and relevant to other media item portions stored within each data container, the data container satisfying a predetermined data container format which comprises grouping relationship information for the plural data containers and a manner for locating the media item portions within each data container, the metadata identifies the respective media item portion as comprising a rights indication that the media item portion is usable by a user for creating a composite media item, the composite media item comprising a plurality of media item portions;

sending, via the network, search parameters related to said metadata and identifying user desired media item portion characteristics to said database;

receiving, via the network, from said database, in response to said sent search parameters, media item portion metadata identifying a media item portion for creating a user composite media item that comprises the received media item portion metadata;

acquiring said media item portion; and

combining, via a computer, said acquired media item portion with another media item portion to form said user composite media item that has associated with it some or all of the metadata associated with said combined media item portions.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising displaying at least a portion of said media item portion related metadata.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein said media item portion related metadata comprises commerce enabling information.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein said commerce enabling information comprises an attribution of a publisher.

5. The method of claim 3 wherein said commerce-enabling information comprises an identity of a rights holder.

6. The method of claim 3 wherein said commerce-enabling information comprises a set of licensing terms.

7. The method of claim 3 wherein said commerce-enabling information comprises a copyright message.

8. The method of claim 3 wherein said commerce-enabling information comprises a digital rights message.

9. The method of claim 3 wherein said commerce-enabling information comprises a pointer to a copyright message.

10. The method of claim 3 wherein said commerce-enabling information comprises a pointer to licensing information.

11. The method of claim 2 wherein said media item portion related metadata comprises a title associated with said media item portion.

12. The method of claim 2 wherein said media item portion related metadata comprises a genre associated with said media item portion.

13. The method of claim 2 wherein said media item portion related metadata comprises an identity of a creator associated with said media item portion.

14. The method of claim 2 wherein said media item portion related metadata comprises an identity of an owner associated with said media item portion.

15. The method of claim 2 wherein said media item portion related metadata comprises commerce-enabling information.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein said parameters comprise a title associated with said media item portion.

17. The method of claim 1 wherein said parameters comprise a genre associated with said media item portion.

18. The method of claim 1 wherein said parameters comprise an identity of a creator associated with said media item portion.

19. The method of claim 1 wherein said parameters comprise an identity of an owner associated with said media item portion.

20. The method of claim 1 wherein said parameters comprise commerce-enabling information.

21. The method of claim 20 wherein said commerce-enabling information comprises usage rights.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein said usage rights comprises a right to use said media item portions in a derivate work.

23. The method of claim 20 wherein said commerce-enabling information comprises a commercial designation.

24. The method of claim 20 wherein said commerce-enabling information comprises a non-commercial designation.

25. The method of claim 20 wherein said commerce-enabling information comprises a price per copy of said media item portion.

26. The method of claim 1 wherein said media item portion related metadata comprises a media item identifier associated with said media item portion.

27. The method of claim 26 wherein said media item identifier is a pointer.

28. The method of claim 26 wherein said media item identifier is a uniform resource locator.

29. The method of claim 26 wherein said media item identifier is an id unique to an online music service.

30. The method of claim 26 wherein said media item identifier is a universal resource identifier.

31. The method of claim 1 wherein said database is located on the internet.

32. The method of claim 1 wherein said database is located on a server.

33. The method of claim 1 wherein said database is located on a network.

34. The method of claim 1 wherein said database is located on a computing device.

35. The method of claim 1 wherein said media item portion is media file.

36. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium tangibly encoded with a set of instructions, that when executed by a processor, perform a method comprising:

communicating, via a network, with a database comprising plural data containers, each data container comprising metadata associated with a respective media item portion, the respective media item portion being a portion or component of a media item and not the entire media item, the metadata of the media item portion satisfying a predetermined minimum requirement based on whether a specific amount and a specific type of metadata associated with the media item is present within each data container and relevant to other media item portions stored within each data container, the data container satisfying a predetermined data container format which comprises grouping relationship information for the plural data containers and a manner for locating the media item portions within each data container, the metadata identifies the respective media item portion as comprising a rights indication that the media item portion is usable by a user for creating a composite media item, the composite media item comprising a plurality of media item portions;

sending, via the network, search parameters conforming to said metadata and identifying user desired media item portion characteristics to said database;

receiving, via the network in response to said sent search parameters, media item portion metadata from said database;

acquiring said media item portion; and

combining, via a computer, said acquired media item portion with another media item portion to form a composite media item that has associated with it some or all of the metadata associated with said combined media item portions.

37. A device comprising:

a plurality of processors;

one of the plurality of processors implementing code for communicating with a database comprising plural data containers, each data container comprising metadata associated with a respective media item portion, the respective media item portion being a portion or component of a media item and not the entire media item, the metadata of the media item portion satisfying a predetermined minimum requirement based on whether a specific amount and a specific type of metadata associated with the media item is present within each data container and relevant to other media item portions stored within each data container, the data container satisfying a predetermined data container format which comprises grouping relationship information for the plural data containers and a manner for locating the media item portions within each data container, the metadata identifies the respective media item portion as comprising a rights indication that the media item portion is usable by a user for creating a composite media item, the composite media item comprising a plurality of media item portions;

one of the plurality of processors implementing code for sending search parameters conforming to said metadata and identifying user defined media item portion characteristics to said database; and

one of the plurality of processors implementing code for receiving, in response to said sent search parameters, media item portion metadata from said database;

acquiring said media item portion; and

combining said acquired media item portion with another media item portion to form a composite media item that has associated with it some or all of the metadata associated with said combined media item portions.
