1. A method comprising:

  • communicating, via a network, with a database comprising plural data containers, each data container comprising metadata associated with a respective media item portion, the respective media item portion being a portion or component of a media item and not the entire media item, the metadata of the media item portion satisfying a predetermined minimum requirement based on whether a specific amount and a specific type of metadata associated with the media item is present within each data container and relevant to other media item portions stored within each data container, the data container satisfying a predetermined data container format which comprises grouping relationship information for the plural data containers and a manner for locating the media item portions within each data container, the metadata identifies the respective media item portion as comprising a rights indication that the media item portion is usable by a user for creating a composite media item, the composite media item comprising a plurality of media item portions;

    sending, via the network, search parameters related to said metadata and identifying user desired media item portion characteristics to said database;

    receiving, via the network, from said database, in response to said sent search parameters, media item portion metadata identifying a media item portion for creating a user composite media item that comprises the received media item portion metadata;

    acquiring said media item portion; and

    combining, via a computer, said acquired media item portion with another media item portion to form said user composite media item that has associated with it some or all of the metadata associated with said combined media item portions.
