1. A method for ocular application of an active substance through iontophoresis, the method comprising:
- disposing a main electrode on an eyelid of a patient;
disposing a return electrode on a tissue of the patient away from the eyelid;
disposing an insert between the eyelid and the eyeball, the insert comprising the active substance and being disposed between the main electrode and the eyeball; and
substantially closing the eyelid and applying an electrical current circulating between the main electrode and the return electrode thereby allowing the active substance to penetrate the sclera of an eyeball of the patient via the applied electrical current, wherein the active substance penetrates into the eyeball via iontophoresis.
