Abstract

A method of radio communications and routing and connection in a mobile radio system consisting of the steps of providing nodes for transmitting and receiving signals wherein the nodes are positioned in a free form fashion within a defined area, and the routing of a communication is determined based on selecting the most desirable and normally the shortest path between the communication source and the destination drop.

Claims

1. A method of providing wireless communication using a plurality of wireless routing nodes forming a wireless communication system to transmit radio signals from an originating wireless node to a destination, wherein the routing nodes are capable of distribution arbitrarily relative to each other to provide a mesh throughout an area to be covered by the system, the method comprising:

transmitting routing messages from a plurality of the nodes and receiving routing messages directly at a plurality of other nodes without regard to the relative location of the nodes transmitting and receiving the routing messages;

selecting received routing messages and transmitting routing messages from nodes based on received routing messages;

using the routing messages to select radio links and combining the selected radio links to create a wireless communication route from the originating node through a plurality of pairs of additional nodes to the destination, wherein transmitting radio signals between a pair of nodes requires a first node in the pair to transmit in one band of frequencies and receive in another band of frequencies, and the second node in the pair to receive in the one band and transmit in the other band; and

creating a second wireless communication route from a different originating node, wherein when the second route includes a node in common with the first route, the common node transmits radio signals in one frequency band in both routes and receives radio signals in a different frequency band in both routes.

2. A method as in claim 1, wherein different nodes transmit routing messages in different time slots.

3. A method as in claim 1, wherein the nodes make measurements of at least one parameter in the routing messages.

4. A method as in claim 3, wherein the nodes select preferred node-to-node radio links based on the measurement.

5. A method as in claim 4, wherein the parameter is signal strength.

6. A method as in claim 1, wherein the routing messages contain node identifying information unique to the node without including identifying information relating to other nodes between the destination and the node.

7. A method as in claim 1, wherein computers in the nodes create the routes without requiring information relating to all of the radio links in a route.

8. A method as in claim 1, wherein the nodes transmit routing messages in pre-assigned time slots.

9. A method as in claim 1, further comprising using computers in a plurality of nodes to assemble at least one of the routes by adding a radio link to a route segment comprising at least one previously selected radio link.

A method as in claim 1, further comprising using computers in a plurality of nodes to assemble the route by adding a radio link to a route segment comprising at least one previously selected radio link, wherein said computers use a predetermined criteria for measuring a quality of a selected route and a selected route has a higher quality than at least two other possible routes between an originating node and said destination node.

11. A method as in claim 10, wherein different nodes transmit routing messages in different time slots.

A method as in claim 1, further comprising determining at a node that receives a routing message a property of a radio link between the node receiving the routing message and the node transmitting the routing message thereto, wherein the received routing message (I) identifies at least one route segment including plural radio links between nodes, including the node transmitting the routing message, and (ii) includes at least one value of the property of identified route segments.

A method as in claim 12, further comprising transmitting a routing message from a node that received a routing message from another node, wherein a computer in the node that received the routing message from the other node (i) generates the transmitted routing message based on the value of the property of a route segment identified in the received routing message and the value of the property of the radio link determined at the node that received the routing message from the other node, and (ii) selects received routing messages not to use for generating routing messages for transmission to other nodes based on values of the property of route segments identified in the received routing messages and on the value of the property of the radio link determined at the node that received the routing message from the other node.

A method as in claim 13, wherein a further node that receives the routing message generated at the one node performs the determining step and generates at least one further routing message based on the value of the property of a route segment identified in the received routing message and on the value of the property of the radio link determined at the further node that received the routing message.

A method as in claim 14, wherein the computer in the further node selects received routing messages not to use for generating further routing messages for transmission based on values of the property of route segments identified in the received routing messages and on the value of the property of the radio link determined at the further node.

16. A method as in claim 15, wherein both routes comprise plural radio links selected by computers in plural nodes without regard to the relative locations thereof using routing messages received by the nodes.

17. A method as in claim 15, wherein the property is signal strength.

18. A method as in claim 15, wherein the value indicates radio link quality and identified route segment quality.

19. A method as in claim 1, wherein the nodes comprise nodes of at least two different categories.

20. A method as in claim 19, wherein two nodes of the same category do not transmit radio signals to and receive radio signals from each other.

21. A method as in claim 20, wherein the categories designate nodes that do not transmit and receive radio signals in the same band at the same time.

22. A method as in claim 1, wherein a route includes plural originating nodes capable of receiving radio signals from a plurality of remote radios that can be positioned arbitrarily relative to the originating nodes, and wherein a remote radio does not receive or transmit the routing messages used to create the wireless communication route from the originating node to the destination.

A method as in claim 22, further comprising transmitting radio signals from an originating node to the other node in the radio link between the originating node and the other node in a first band of frequencies, transmitting radio signals from the other node to the originating node in a second band of frequencies, receiving radio signals from the remote radio at the originating node in a third band of frequencies, and transmitting radio signals from the originating node to the remote radio in a fourth band of frequencies.

A method as in claim 23, further comprising transmitting from the originating node to the other node on a channel in the first frequency band, transmitting from the other node to the originating node on a channel in the second frequency band, receiving from the remote at the originating node on a channel in the third frequency band, and transmitting from the originating node to the remote on a channel in the fourth frequency band.

A method as in claim 1, wherein a route includes a first originating node for receiving a radio signal from a remote radio and at least two other nodes, the other nodes including computers with hand-off circuitry for (a) monitoring radio signals from the remote radio to determine whether to terminate reception of the radio signal at the first originating node, (b) selecting a second originating node for receiving the remote radio signal, wherein the second originating node is in a second route that comprises a number of radio links to a destination node that is different from the number of radio links from the first originating node to the destination node, and (c) terminating reception of the remote radio signal at the first originating node and initiating reception thereof at the second originating node.
