1. A solid state lighting device comprising:

  • a base end;

    at least one solid state emitter; and

    a heatsink disposed between the base end and the at least one solid state emitter, and arranged to dissipate heat generated by the at least one solid state emitter;

    wherein;

    the heatsink includes a first end proximate to the base end, the first end having a first width;

    the heatsink includes a second end disposed between the base end and the at least one solid state emitter, the second end having a second width;

    wherein the lighting device includes one of the following features (i) and (ii);

    (i) the first width is greater than the second width, and width of the heatsink increases continuously with increasing distance in a direction from the second end toward the first end, and the heatsink is exposed to an ambient air environment, or(ii) the heatsink includes a width that increases, then decreases, and then increases again with increasing distance in a direction from the second end toward the first end to yield sequentially arranged first and second reverse tapered portions.
