Abstract

Optical computing devices are disclosed. One exemplary optical computing device includes an electromagnetic radiation source configured to optically interact with a sample and first and second integrated computational elements arranged in primary and reference channels, respectively. The first and second integrated computational elements produce first and second modified electromagnetic radiations, and a detector is arranged to receive the first and second modified electromagnetic radiations and generate an output signal corresponding to the characteristic of the sample.

Claims

1. A method of determining a characteristic of a sample, comprising:

optically interacting an electromagnetic radiation source with the sample and a first integrated computational element arranged within a primary channel and a second integrated computational element arranged within a reference channel;

producing first and second modified electromagnetic radiations from the first and second integrated computational elements, respectively;

receiving the first and second modified electromagnetic radiations with a first detector; and

generating an output signal with the first detector, the output signal corresponding to the characteristic of the sample, wherein the first integrated computational element is selected according to a first spectral response associated with the characteristic of the sample, and the second integrated computational element is selected according to a second spectral response associated with the same characteristic of the sample, thereby increasing a sensitivity of the output signal.

The method of claim 1, wherein the first detector is a split detector comprising a first detector portion arranged in the primary channel and a second detector portion arranged in the reference channel, wherein receiving the first and second modified electromagnetic radiations further comprises:

receiving the first modified electromagnetic radiation with the first detector portion; and

receiving the second modified electromagnetic radiation with the second detector portion.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising computationally combining the first and second modified electromagnetic radiations with the first detector to determine the characteristic of the sample.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein the output signal comprises a first output signal generated by the first detector portion and a second output signal generated by the second detector portion, the method further comprising:

receiving the first and second output signals with a signal processor communicably coupled to the first detector; and

computationally combining the first and second output signals with the signal processor to determine the characteristic of the sample.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising:

detecting with a second detector electromagnetic radiation from the electromagnetic radiation source, the second detector being arranged within a second reference channel;

generating a compensation signal with the second detector, the compensation signal being indicative of electromagnetic radiating deviations;

receiving the compensation signal with the signal processor; and

computationally combining the compensation signal with the first and second output signals to normalize the first and second output signals.

The method of claim 1, further comprising rotating the first and second integrated computational elements within a movable assembly configured for rotation, the at least two integrated computational elements being radially disposed within the movable assembly, wherein the primary channel is generated as the first integrated computational element aligns with the electromagnetic radiation source and the first detector, and the reference channel is generated as the second integrated computational element aligns with the electromagnetic radiation source and the first detector.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

optically interacting the electromagnetic radiation source with at least one neutral element radially disposed within the movable assembly for rotation therewith, the neutral element being arranged within a second reference channel generated as the neutral element aligns with the electromagnetic radiation source and the first detector; and

producing a compensating signal from the neutral element indicative of radiating deviations of the electromagnetic radiation source.

8. The method of claim 7, further comprising:

receiving with the first detector the compensating signal; and

computationally combining the compensating signal with the first and second output signals in order to compensate for electromagnetic radiating deviations.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising oscillating the first and second integrated computational elements as arranged on a linear array.

10. A method for determining a characteristic of a sample, comprising:

directing electromagnetic radiation to the sample and thereby generating optically interacted light;

separating the optically interacted light into a first portion and a second portion;

directing the first portion to a first integrated computational element;

directing the second portion to a second integrated computational element;

forming a first primary channel according to a first spectral response to the first integrated computational element, the first spectral response being associated with the characteristic of the sample;

forming a second primary channel according to a second spectral response to the second integrated computational element, the second spectral response also being associated with the same characteristic of the sample, thereby increasing a sensitivity of the output signal; and

determining the characteristic of the sample with an increased sensitivity based on a signal from the first primary channel and a signal from the second primary channel.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein separating the optically interacted light comprises directing the optically interacted light to a beam splitter, the method further comprising:

providing the signal from the first primary channel to a first detector; and

providing the signal from the second primary channel to a second detector.

The method of claim 10, further comprising forming a reference channel by directing a portion of the optically interacted light into a beam splitter, wherein the beam splitter is coupled to a structure comprising the first integrated computational element and the second integrated computational element, and wherein the second integrated computational element is smaller than the first integrated computational element.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein separating the optically interacted light comprises:

forming the first portion adjacent to the second portion;

receiving the first portion in a first side of a detector; and

receiving the second portion in a second side of the detector.

The method of claim 12, wherein the reference optical element and the separating optical element are integrated into a movable assembly, the method further comprising rotating the movable assembly for directing the first portion to the first integrated computational element and directing the second portion to the second integrated computational element.

The method of claim 12, wherein the reference optical element and the separating optical element are integrated into a linear array, the method further comprising translating the linear array relative to the optically interacted light for directing the first portion to the first integrated computational element and directing the second portion to the second integrated computational element.

16. The method of claim 10, further comprising

coupling the optically interacted light to one or more optical light pipes;

and

conveying the optically interacted light individually to each of the first and second primary channels.

17. The method of claim 12, further comprising compensating a radiating deviation of the light source with a signal from the reference channel.

18. The method of claim 12, wherein determining the characteristic of the sample comprises determining at least a ratio between any two of the signals from the first primary channel, the signal from the second primary channel, and the reference signal.

The method of claim 10, wherein the first integrated computational element and the second integrated computational element are selected so that the signal from the first primary channel is associated with the characteristic of the sample, and the signal from the second primary channel is disassociated with the characteristic of the sample.

20. The method of claim 10, wherein the first integrated computational element and the second integrated computational element are selected so that an increase in sensitivity for the characteristic of the sample is associated with an increase in accuracy for the characteristic of the sample.
