1. A receiving intelligent electronic device (IED) configured to calculate a fault location in an electric power delivery system based on a traveling wave created by an electrical fault in the electric power delivery system, the receiving IED comprising:

  • a communications port;

    control logic in communication with the communications port, the control logic configured to;

    detect a transient traveling wave caused by an electrical fault by using a plurality of data samples representing measurements of a parameter of the electric power delivery system;

    detect a first value of the transient traveling wave;

    detect a first time associated with the first value;

    compensate the first time based on a delay associated with propagation of the transient traveling wave in a secondary cable of a known length in communication with the receiving IED, the secondary cable from the electric power delivery system to the receiving IED; and

    ,generate an estimated fault location based on the first time.
