1. An integrated point of care medication administration system, comprising:
- at least one repository of information associating individual medications of a plurality of different medications with data identifying patient parameters and laboratory test results to be acquired and recorded prior to administration of an individual medication to a patient and identifying data sources and their associated communication data including at least one of, address, location, format, communication protocols, to provide corresponding particular patient parameters and laboratory test results, wherein the repository of information further associates one or more laboratory test result acquisition conditions with an individual medication;
a point of care medication administration system including,an interface to communicate with said at least one repository and interrogating said sources comprising, a specimen collection system, a laboratory information system and a patient monitoring device,a processor to use said information and said interface in automatically acquiring for a particular patient data representing particular patient parameters and laboratory test results, including a date and time that the laboratory test results were acquired, associated with a particular individual medication in response to user initiation of an order for said particular individual medication to be administered to said particular patient anda display device to present at least one display image indicating automatically acquired particular patient parameters and laboratory test results of said particular patient and data identifying a particular patient parameter or laboratory test result needing to be acquired and recorded prior to administration of said particular individual medication to said particular patient, wherein said display image displays an alert message indicating at least one of the laboratory test results may be invalid pursuant to the determination that the laboratory test result is acquired at a date and time that exceeds a limit set by the acquisition conditions.

Abstract
An integrated point of care medication administration system comprises a point of care medication administration system including an interface for communicating with the at least one repository and information sources and including a processor. The processor uses the information and the interface in automatically acquiring for a particular patient, data representing particular patient parameters and laboratory test results associated with a particular individual medication in response to user initiation of an order for the particular individual medication to be administered to the particular patient. A display device presents at least one display image indicating acquired particular patient parameters and laboratory test results of the particular patient and identifying a particular patient parameter or laboratory test result needing to be acquired prior to administration of the particular individual medication to the particular patient.

15. A method for documenting medication administration, comprising the activities:

employing at least one computer processing device for, storing in at least one repository of information associating individual medications of a plurality of different medications with data identifying patient parameters and laboratory test results to be acquired and recorded prior to administration of an individual medication to a patient and identifying data sources and their associated communication data including at least one of, address, location, format, communication protocols, for providing corresponding particular patient parameters and laboratory test results, wherein the repository of information further associates one or more laboratory test result acquisition conditions with an individual medication; communicating with said at least one repository and interrogating said sources comprising, a specimen collection system, a laboratory information system and a patient monitoring device, using said information in automatically acquiring for a particular patient data representing particular patient parameters and laboratory test results, including a date and time that the laboratory test results were acquired, associated with a particular individual medication in response to user initiation of an order for said particular individual medication to be administered to said particular patient; and presenting at least one display image indicating automatically acquired particular patient parameters and laboratory test results of said particular patient and data identifying a particular patient parameter or laboratory test result needing to be acquired and recorded prior to administration of said particular individual medication to said particular patient, wherein said display image displays an alert message indicating at least one of the laboratory test results may be invalid pursuant to the determination that the laboratory test result is acquired at a date and time that exceeds a limit set by the acquisition conditions. - View Dependent Claims (16)
