Abstract

A load control system provides for automatically controlling a position of a motorized window treatment to control the amount of sunlight entering a space of a building through a window located in a façade of the building in order to control a sunlight penetration distance within the space and minimize occupant distractions. The load control system automatically generates a timeclock schedule having a number of timeclock events for controlling the position of the motorized window treatment during the present day. A user is able to select a desired maximum sunlight penetration distance for the space and a minimum time period that may occur between any two consecutive timeclock events. In addition, a maximum number of movements that may occur during the timeclock schedule may also be entered. The load control system uses these inputs to determine event times and corresponding positions of the motorized window treatment for each timeclock event of the timeclock schedule.

Claims

1. A method of automatically controlling a position of a motorized window treatment, the motorized window treatment adapted to control the amount of sunlight entering a space of a building through a window, the position of the window treatment controllable between an open-limit position and a closed-limit position to control a sunlight penetration distance within the space, the method comprising:

receiving a minimum time period that may occur between any two consecutive motorized window treatment movements;

prior to the start of a plurality of consecutive time intervals, calculating optimal positions of the motorized window treatment at a plurality of different times during each of the time intervals, where the optimal positions are calculated to prevent the sunlight penetration distance from exceeding the desired maximum sunlight penetration distance during the time intervals;

using the optimal positions to determine a respective controlled position to which the motorized window treatment will be controlled during each of the time intervals; and

subsequently adjusting the position of the motorized window treatment to the respective controlled position at the beginning of each of the time intervals, such that the sunlight penetration distance does not exceed the desired maximum sunlight penetration distance during the time intervals;

wherein each time interval has a length greater than or equal to the minimum time period that may occur between any two consecutive window treatment movements.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the building comprises multiple faç

ades each having a plurality of windows covered by respective motorized window treatments.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the step of calculating optimal positions of the motorized window treatment further comprises calculating optimal positions of the motorized window treatment as a function of the longitude and latitude of the location of the building, an angle of the faç

ade on which the respective motorized window treatment is located with respect to true north, a height of the window, and the present date and time.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein the controlled positions are the same for all of the motorized window treatments along a single faç

ade of the building, such that the positions of the motorized window treatments are aligned along the single faç

ade.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein the time intervals have equal lengths.

6. The method of claim 2, wherein the motorized window treatments are adjusted at times according to a predetermined timeclock schedule.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

building a timeclock schedule including a number of timeclock events each having an event time corresponding to the beginning of one of the time intervals and a respective event position corresponding to the respective controlled position of the respective time interval;

wherein the step of automatically adjusting the position of the motorized window treatment to the calculated position at the beginning of each time interval comprises automatically controlling the motorized window treatment according to the timeclock schedule by adjusting the position of the motorized window treatment to the respective event position of each of the timeclock events at the respective event time.

The method of claim 1, wherein the step of using the optimal positions to determine a respective controlled position to which the motorized window treatment will be controlled during each of the time intervals further comprises setting the respective controlled position of each time interval equal to a lowest one of the optimal positions during the time interval.

A load control system for controlling the amount of sunlight entering a space of a building through a window, the load control system including a motorized window treatment adapted to control the amount of sunlight entering the space through the window, the position of the window treatment controllable between an open-limit position and a closed-limit position to control a sunlight penetration distance within the space, the load control system comprising:

a central controller configured to transmit digital commands to the motorized window treatment, the controller configured to

receive a minimum time period that may occur between any two consecutive motorized window treatment movements;

prior to the start of a plurality of consecutive time intervals, calculate optimal positions of the motorized window treatment at a plurality of different times during each of the time intervals, where the optimal positions are calculated to prevent the sunlight penetration distance from exceeding the desired maximum sunlight penetration distance during the time intervals;

use the optimal positions to determine a respective controlled position to which the motorized window treatment will be controlled during each of the time intervals; and

subsequently adjust the position of the motorized window treatment to the respective controlled position at the beginning of each of the time intervals, such that the sunlight penetration distance does not exceed the desired maximum sunlight penetration distance during the time intervals;

wherein each time interval has a length greater than or equal to the minimum time period that may occur between any two consecutive window treatment movements.

10. The load control system of claim 9, wherein the building comprises multiple faç

ades each having a plurality of windows covered by respective motorized window treatments.

11. The load control system of claim 10, wherein the central controller is configured to calculate the optimal positions of the motorized window treatment as a function of the longitude and latitude of the location of the building, an angle of the faç

ade on which the respective motorized window treatment is located with respect to true north, a height of the window, and the present date and time.

12. The load control system of claim 10, wherein the controlled positions are the same for all of the motorized window treatments along a single faç

ade of the building, such that the positions of the motorized window treatments are aligned along the single faç

ade.

13. The load control system of claim 10, wherein the time intervals have equal lengths.

14. The load control system of claim 10, wherein the central controllers adjusts the positions of the motorized window treatments at times according to a predetermined timeclock schedule.

The load control system of claim 9, wherein the central controller is further configured to build a timeclock schedule including a number of timeclock events each having an event time corresponding to the beginning of one of the time intervals and a respective event position corresponding to the respective controlled position of the respective time interval, the central controller configured to automatically control the motorized window treatment according to the timeclock schedule by adjusting the position of the motorized window treatment to the respective event position of each of the timeclock events at the respective event time.

16. The load control system of claim 9, wherein the central controller sets the respective controlled position of each time interval equal to a lowest one of the optimal positions during the time interval.
