1. A method of associating a plurality of objects, the method comprising the steps of:
- defining a physical space that is limited to a portion of a single room;
associating the physical space with a patient;
determining by use of a real-time locating system (RTLS) that a medical device is within the physical space;
upon a determination that a medical device is within the physical space, automatically associating the medical device with the patient;
determining by use of the real-time locating system (RTLS) that at least one of a caregiver, a medication, or a medical substance is within the physical space;
upon a determination that at least one of a caregiver, a medication, or a medical substance is within the physical space, associating such with the medical device; and
presenting, on a graphic display, a list of caregivers determined to be within the physical space to be selected for operation of the medical device; and
upon receipt of a selected caregiver from the list of caregivers, associating action relating to the medical device with the selected caregiver.

Abstract
A system and method of associating a plurality of objects is disclosed. A physical space is defined and a real-time locating system (RTLS) is used to determine objects that are within the physical space. The objects determined by the RTLS to be within the physical space are associated. The objects include at least one of a caregiver, a patient, a medical device, a medication, and a medical substance.

1. A method of associating a plurality of objects, the method comprising the steps of:

16. A system comprising:

a real-time locating system (RTLS) transceiver configured (i) to identify a medical device comprising an RTLS tag that is within a physical space that is limited to a portion of a single room, the physical space being associated with a patient, and (ii) to identify a plurality of caregivers within the physical space; a processor coupled to the RTLS transceiver, wherein the processor is configured (i) to receive the identification of the tagged medical device, (ii) upon receipt of the identification of the tagged medical device, to automatically associate the medical device with the patient and to automatically record an assignment of the medical device to the patient in a database, (iii) to output, on a graphic display, a list of the plurality of caregivers within the physical space to be selected for operation of the medical device, (iv) to receive a selected caregiver, and (v) to associate, upon receipt of a selected caregiver from the list of caregivers, action relating to the medical device with the selected caregiver. - View Dependent Claims (17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24)

25. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having computer-executable instructions stored thereon for execution by a processor to perform a method of associating a plurality of objects, the method comprising:

defining a physical space that is limited to a portion of a single room; associating the physical space with a patient; determining by use of a real-time locating system (RTLS) that a medical device is within the physical space; upon a determination that a medical device is within the physical space, automatically associating the medical device with the patient; upon an association of the medical device with the patient, automatically recording an assignment of the medical device to the patient in a database; determining by use of the real-time locating system (RTLS) that at least one of a caregiver, a medication, or a medical substance is within the physical space; upon a determination that at least one of a caregiver, a medication, or a medical substance is within the physical space, associating such with the medical device; and presenting, on a graphic display, a list of caregivers determined to be within the physical space to be selected for operation of the medical device; and

37. A method of associating a medication or a medical substance to a patient, the method comprising the steps of:

defining a physical space that is limited to a portion of a single room; associating the physical space with a patient; determining by use of a real-time locating system (RTLS) that (i) a medical device is within the physical space and (ii) more than one caregiver is within the physical space; upon a determination that a medical device is within the physical space, automatically associating medical device with the patient; upon an association of the medical device with the patient, automatically recording an assignment of the medical device to the patient in a database; determining by use of the RTLS that a medication or medical substance is within the physical space; upon a determination that a medication or medical substance is within the physical space, automatically associating the medication or medical substance with the medical device; verifying that the medication or medical substance has been prescribed for the patient; upon verification that the medication or medical substance has been prescribed for the patient, downloading the operation or administration parameters for the medication or medical substance to the medical device and prompting a caregiver of the more than one caregivers to initiate administration of the medicine or medical substance; presenting, on a graphic display, a list of caregivers determined to be within the physical space to be selected for operation of the medical device; and upon receipt of a selected caregiver from the list of caregivers, associating action relating to the medical device with the selected caregiver.
