Scheduling data transmissions in a wireless communications network
First Claim
1. A user terminal for use in a wireless communication system, comprising:
- a transmitter configured to transmit to a network entity over a signalling channel, a first rate request message that requests additional resources from said network entity for transmission of data at an increased data rate over a data channel;
a receiver configured to receive a rate grant message from said network entity,a channel maintainer configured to maintain said signalling channel for a period for awaiting said rate grant message; and
wherein the transmitter is further configured to always transmit at least one second rate request message over said signalling channel during said period without waiting for a rate grant message or end of said period for awaiting said rate grant message, wherein the at least one second rate request message is a repeat of the first request message, andwherein the first rate request message is a single reserved bit transmitted together with other uplink signalling information and the single reserved bit has a value selected from a first value indicating that the increased data rate is required and a second value indicating that a current rate of data transmission over the data channel is sufficient.

Abstract
A method of scheduling transmission of data in a wireless communication network comprising: establishing a data channel for transmitting user data from a user equipment to a network entity, establishing a signalling channel for transmitting signalling data from a user equipment to a network entity, transmitting over said signalling channel from the user equipment a first rate request message requesting additional resources from the network for transmission of data at an increased data rate over said data channel, maintaining said signalling channel for a period awaiting a rate grant message, and transmitting a second rate request message over said signalling channel during said period.

13. A network entity for a wireless communication system, comprising:
-
a receiver configured to receive a first rate request message from a user equipment, wherein the first rate request message is a single reserved bit sent together with other uplink signaling information, and the single reserved bit has a value selected from a first value indicating that the user equipment requires an increased data rate and a second value indicating that a current rate of data transmission over the data channel is sufficient, a determiner configured to determine within a predetermined time period for issuing a rate grant message whether the rate grant message is to be issued for the user equipment based on network resources and based on the value of the single reserved bit, and an issuer configured to issue said rate grant message if there are adequate network resources and the single reserved bit has the first value, wherein at least one subsequent rate request message sent by the user equipment without waiting for the rate grant message or end of said predetermined time period for issuing a rate grant message is received during said predetermined time period is ignored, wherein the at least one subsequent rate request message is a repeat of the first rate request message. - View Dependent Claims (14, 15, 16)

17. A method, comprising:
-
receiving in a network entity for a wireless communication system a first rate request message from a user equipment, wherein the first rate request message is a single reserved bit sent together with other uplink signaling information, and the single reserved bit has a value selected from a first value indicating that the user equipment requires an increased data rate and a second value indicating that a current rate of data transmission over the data channel is sufficient, determining, within a predetermined time period for issuing a rate grant message, whether the rate grant message is to be issued for the user equipment based on network resources and based on the value of the single reserved bit, issuing said rate grant message if there are adequate network resources and the single reserved bit has the first value, and ignoring at least one subsequent received rate request message that has been sent by the user equipment without waiting for the rate grant message or end of said predetermined time period for issuing a rate grant message, wherein the at least one subsequent rate request message is a repeat of the first rate request message. - View Dependent Claims (18, 19, 20, 21)
