1. A method comprising:
- receiving, at a first communication device, a radio frequency (RF) signal including a plurality of packets from a second communication device of a communication network;
determining that the plurality of packets include audio data;
determining a power level of each of a plurality of communication frequencies based, at least in part, on the audio data, wherein the plurality of communication frequencies are associated with an operating frequency band of the first communication device;
determining whether the audio data associated with the plurality of packets includes voice information based, at least in part, on comparing the power level of each of the plurality of communication frequencies against a corresponding power level threshold; and
switching to a power save mode at the first communication device based, at least in part, on determining that the audio data does not include voice information.

Abstract
A mechanism can be implemented in a communication unit of a network device to utilize periods of silence encountered in voice communication to conserve power at the network device. In some embodiments, it can be determined that one or more packets of a received RF signal comprise audio data. The communication unit of the network device can determine whether the audio data associated with the one or more packets comprises voice information. The network device can switch to a power save mode based, at least in part, on determining that the audio data associated with the one or more packets does not comprise voice information.
