1. A method of wireless communication of a cognitive base station transmitting on an operational channel, comprising:

  • obtaining information corresponding to,

         1) for each of a plurality of neighboring base stations, a white space channel selected by the respective neighboring base station, and

         2) interference measurements for each of the plurality of selected white space channels;

    creating a list of candidate white space channels based on a value ranking for each of the plurality of selected white space channels, wherein the value ranking of a respective white space channel is based on the number of neighboring base stations that selected the respective white space channel and the interference measurements for the respective white space channel, and the list is in an order of interference or likelihood of causing interference;

    selecting a backup channel from the list of candidate white space channels; and

    transitioning from the operational channel to the backup channel based on a predefined criteria by stopping the transmission on the operational channel and initiating a transmission on the backup channel.
