1. A playback device for providing audio in a multi-channel listening environment, the playback device comprising:
- a network interface for facilitating communication on a network, wherein the network interface receives audio data over the network;
a plurality of speaker drivers for providing an output of the audio data;
at least one amplifier for powering the plurality of speaker drivers; and
a processor for processing the audio data to be output through the plurality of speaker drivers; and
a computer readable medium storing program instructions executable by the processor for causing the playback device to;
based on a first instruction from a controller, apply a first frequency parameter to the audio data in accordance with a first type of pairing of the playback device; and
based on a second instruction from the controller and a change in type of pairing from the first type of pairing to a second type of pairing, apply a second frequency parameter to the audio data in accordance with the second type of pairing of the playback device.

Abstract
Technology for grouping, consolidating, and pairing individual playback devices with network capability (players) to stimulate a multi-channel listening environment is disclosed. Particularly, the embodiments described herein enable two or more playback devices to be paired, such that multi-channel audio is achieved. Such embodiments may be used to produce stereo and multi-channel audio environments for television and movies.
