Abstract

Breast implants including sensor modules and related methods are described herein. Breast implants include those with: a shell configured to be substantially filled with a viscous material; at least one fluid-permeable cover, the cover completely enveloping the shell; and a plurality of sensor modules attached to the shell and positioned at a distance from each other, each of the sensor modules oriented to detect one or more analytes in a fluid between the shell and the cover, wherein each of the plurality of sensor modules includes a unique identifier and is configured to utilize energy transmitted from an external source.

Claims

1. A breast implant comprising:

a shell configured to be substantially filled with a viscous material;

at least one fluid-permeable cover, the cover completely enveloping the shell;

a gap between the shell and the at least one fluid-permeable cover; and

a plurality of sensor modules attached to the shell and positioned substantially equally from each other, each of the sensor modules positioned between the shell and the cover, each of the plurality of sensor modules including a unique positional identifier and each of the plurality of sensor modules configured to utilize energy transmitted from an external source.

2. The breast implant of claim 1, wherein the at least one fluid-permeable cover comprises:

an analyte-permeable cover.

3. The breast implant of claim 1, wherein the at least one fluid-permeable cover comprises:

a porous structure.

4. The breast implant of claim 1, wherein the at least one fluid-permeable cover is configured to completely envelop the shell with a uniform gap between the cover and the shell.

5. The breast implant of claim 1, wherein the plurality of sensor modules attached to the shell comprise:

at least one of the plurality of sensor modules configured to detect at least two of the one or more analytes in the fluid adjacent to the shell, wherein the at least two analytes are of different types.

6. The breast implant of claim 1, wherein the plurality of sensor modules attached to the shell comprise:

at least two sensor units in each of the plurality of sensor modules.

7. The breast implant of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of sensor modules attached to the shell comprise:

an antenna.

8. The breast implant of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of sensor modules attached to the shell comprise:

an energy harvesting unit.

9. The breast implant of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of sensor modules attached to the shell comprise:

a radio frequency identification (RFID) unit.

10. The breast implant of claim 1, wherein the plurality of sensor modules attached to the shell are configured to detect one or more biological analytes arising from biological tissue.

11. The breast implant of claim 1, wherein the plurality of sensor modules are configured to be rechargeable.

12. The breast implant of claim 1, wherein the unique identifier for each of the plurality of sensor modules comprises:

an alphanumeric code.

13. The breast implant of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of sensor modules is configured to utilize energy transmitted from an ex-vivo source.

14. The breast implant of claim 1, comprising:

a processor.

15. A breast implant comprising:

a shell configured to be substantially filled with a viscous material;

at least one fluid-permeable cover, the cover completely enveloping the shell;

a gap between the shell and the at least one fluid-permeable cover;

a plurality of sensor modules attached to the shell and positioned substantially equally from each other, each of the plurality of sensor modules positioned between the shell and the cover, wherein each of the plurality of sensor modules includes a unique positional identifier;

at least one antenna;

an energy harvesting unit attached to the at least one antenna; and

at least one connection between the energy harvesting unit and each of the plurality of sensor modules.

16. The breast implant of claim 15, wherein the at least one fluid-permeable cover comprises:

an analyte-permeable cover.

17. The breast implant of claim 15, wherein the at least one fluid-permeable cover comprises:

a porous structure.

18. The breast implant of claim 15, wherein the cover is configured to completely envelop the shell with a uniform gap between the at least one fluid-permeable cover and the shell.

19. The breast implant of claim 15, wherein the plurality of sensor modules attached to the shell comprise:

at least one of the plurality of sensor modules configured to detect at least two analytes in the fluid adjacent to the shell, wherein the at least two of the one or more analytes are of different types.

20. The breast implant of claim 15, wherein the plurality of sensor modules attached to the shell comprise:

at least two sensor units in each of the plurality of sensor modules.

21. The breast implant of claim 15, wherein the plurality of sensor modules are configured to detect one or more biological analytes arising from biological tissue.

22. The breast implant of claim 15, wherein the plurality of sensor modules are configured to be rechargeable.

23. The breast implant of claim 15, wherein the unique identifier for each of the plurality of sensor modules comprises:

an alphanumeric code.

24. The breast implant of claim 15, wherein the at least one antenna comprises:

a radio frequency (RF) antenna.

25. The breast implant of claim 15, wherein the energy harvesting unit attached to the at least one antenna comprises:

a radio frequency identification (RFID) unit.

26. The breast implant of claim 15, wherein the energy harvesting unit attached to the at least one antenna comprises:

an inductive energy harvesting unit.

27. The breast implant of claim 15, wherein the energy harvesting unit attached to the at least one antenna is configured to harvest energy originating ex-vivo when the breast implant is in use.

28. The breast implant of claim 15, comprising:

a processor operably attached to the at least one antenna.

29. The breast implant of claim 15, comprising:

a switch operably attached to the at least one antenna.

30. A breast implant comprising:

a shell configured to be substantially filled with a viscous material;

at least one fluid-permeable cover, the cover completely enveloping the shell;

a plurality of sensor modules attached to the shell at substantially equal intervals, the plurality of sensor modules positioned between the shell and the cover, each of the plurality of sensor modules including a unique positional identifier;

at least one optically powered transducer configured to harvest optical energy from a source external to the breast implant; and

at least one connector operably connecting the at least one optically powered transducer and the plurality of sensor modules.

31. The breast implant of claim 30, wherein the at least one fluid-permeable cover comprises:

an analyte-permeable cover.

32. The breast implant of claim 30, wherein the at least one fluid-permeable cover comprises:

a porous structure.

33. The breast implant of claim 30, wherein the at least one fluid-permeable cover is configured to completely envelop the shell with a uniform gap between the at least one fluid-permeable cover and the shell.

34. The breast implant of claim 30, wherein the plurality of sensor modules attached to the shell comprise:

at least one of the plurality of sensor modules configured to detect at least two analytes in the fluid adjacent to the shell, wherein the at least two analytes are of different types.

35. The breast implant of claim 30, wherein the unique identifier for each of the plurality of sensor modules comprises:

an alphanumeric code.

36. The breast implant of claim 30, wherein the at least one optically powered transducer is attached to the shell, and wherein the at least one fluid-permeable cover is translucent.

37. The breast implant of claim 30, wherein the at least one optically powered transducer is attached to the at least one fluid-permeable cover, and includes an optical receiver positioned on an exterior surface of the at least one fluid-permeable cover.

38. A breast implant, comprising:

a shell configured to be substantially filled with a viscous material;

at least one fluid-permeable cover, the cover completely enveloping the shell;

at least one energy-harvesting unit configured to receive non-electrical energy from an external source and convert the received energy into electrical energy;

a plurality of sensor modules attached to the shell at substantially equal intervals, the sensor modules positioned to detect one or more biological analytes arising from biological tissue;

a connector between the at least one energy-harvesting unit and the plurality of sensor modules, the connector configured to transmit electrical energy from the at least one energy-harvesting unit to the plurality of sensor modules; and

at least one transmission unit attached to the plurality of sensor modules, the at least one transmission unit configured to initiate a signal in response to one or more of the plurality of sensor modules.

39. The breast implant of claim 38, wherein the plurality of sensor modules are positioned on the shell with a distance between the sensor modules.

40. The breast implant of claim 38, comprising:

at least one switch attached to both the at least one transmission unit and the plurality of sensor modules, the at least one switch configured to activate the transmission unit in response to a signal from one or more of the sensor modules.
