A composition comprising a plurality of different, spatially encoded beads, comprisinga polymer matrix and from 3 to not more than 10 spatially immobilized, individually detectable particles held in the polymer matrix,wherein each bead has a diameter of from 0.5 millimeter to less than 2.0 millimeter,wherein the diameter of the particles is less than 30 micrometer, the particles being disposed in a spatial configuration relative to one another that constitutes the code serving to identify each bead.
