Abstract

The invention provides an implantable multi-electrode device (300) and related methods and apparatuses. In one embodiment, the invention includes an implantable device (300) comprising: an assembly block (320); and a plurality of leads (340 . . . 348) radiating from the assembly block (320), each of the plurality of leads (340 . . . 348) containing at least one electrode (342A), such that the electrodes are distributed within a three-dimensional space, wherein the assembly block (320) includes a barb (350) for anchoring the assembly block (320) within implanted tissue.

Claims

1. An implantable device comprising:

an assembly block;

a plurality of leads radiating from the assembly block, each of the plurality of leads containing at least one electrode such that the electrodes are distributed within a three-dimensional space; and

a biodegradable encapsulant containing the assembly block, the plurality of leads and the electrodes during implantation,

wherein the electrodes assume a first distribution while the leads are contained within the biodegradable encapsulant and a second distribution upon degradation of the biodegradable encapsulant.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the assembly block includes at least one barb for anchoring the assembly block within implanted tissue.

3. The device of claim 1 further comprising:

at least one lead wire configured to distribute a stimulus to the assembly block, wherein the assembly block includes electronic multiplexing circuitry operable to distribute the stimulus to at least one of the electrodes.

4. The device of claim 3, wherein the electronic multiplexing circuitry is controlled by at least one of the following:

a lead wire and a radio frequency telemetry link.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein at least one of the plurality of leads includes more than one electrode.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the plurality of leads are prearranged such that the distribution of the electrodes corresponds to a targeted volume of the implanted tissue.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the encapsulant includes at least one of the following:

polylactic acid (PLA), polyglycolic acid (PGA), polydioxanone (PDS), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and polyhydroxy butyrate (PHB).

8. The device of claim 1 further comprising:

means for determining at least one of the angular orientation and the rotation of the device during implantation.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein the biodegradable encapsulant initially forms a pointed edge configured to cut through tissue during implantation.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of leads have a stiffness sufficient to penetrate into brain tissue during implantation.

11. The device of claim 1, wherein each of the electrodes have a diameter approximately equal to a diameter of each of the plurality of leads.

12. The device of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of leads has a diameter less than about 2 mm.

13. The device of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of leads has a length less than about 40 mm.

14. A system for implanting an implantable device, the system comprising:

an apparatus for implanting the implantable device comprising;

an outer tube; and

an inner tube having a mating feature,

wherein an inner diameter of the outer tube is at least as great as an outer diameter of the inner tube such that the implantable device may be moved through the outer tube by the inner tube; and

an implantable device according to claim 1 further having a mating feature arranged on a surface of the implantable device configured to couple with the mating feature of the inner tube.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein at least one of an angular orientation and a rotation of the implantable device may be controlled by manipulation of the mating feature of the inner tube.

16. The system of claim 14, wherein the inner tube of the implantation apparatus is adapted to contain at least one lead wire of the implantable device.
