Abstract

A sound enrichment system for provision of tinnitus relief, the sound enrichment system includes a noise generator, an environment classifier that is configured to determine a classification of an ambient sound environment of the sound enrichment system, a processing system for adjusting a noise signal based at least in part on the classification, wherein the noise signal is obtained using the noise generator, and an output transducer for conversion of the adjusted noise signal to an acoustic signal for presentation to a user. A method of providing a noise enriched sound signal for provision of relief of tinnitus includes obtaining a noise signal, adjusting the noise signal based at least in part on a sound environment classification, generating an acoustic noise signal from the adjusted noise signal, and presenting the acoustic noise signal to a tinnitus suffering person.

Claims

1. A sound enrichment system for provision of tinnitus relief, the sound enrichment system comprising:

a noise generator, wherein the noise generator is configured to provide an output signal that is a noise signal or an output signal from which a noise signal can be obtained;

an environment classifier that is configured to determine a classification of an ambient sound environment of the sound enrichment system, the classification being one of a number of predetermined sound classes that classify different types of environments;

a processing system configured for adjusting the noise signal and to provide an adjusted noise signal based at least in part on the classification; and

an output transducer configured for conversion of the adjusted noise signal to an acoustic signal for presentation to a user;

wherein the noise generator, the environment classifier, the processing system, and the output transducer are parts of the sound enrichment system configured for providing tinnitus relief for the user.

2. The sound enrichment system according to claim 1, wherein the processing system is configured to adjust the noise signal by performing a random or a pseudo-random modulation on the noise signal.

3. The sound enrichment system according to claim 2, wherein the random or pseudo-random modulation of the noise signal comprises randomly or pseudo-randomly choosing a modulation value from an event space of modulation values.

4. The sound enrichment system according to claim 2, wherein the random or pseudo-random modulation of the noise signal comprises randomly or pseudo-randomly choosing a modulation period from an event space of modulation periods.

5. The sound enrichment system according to claim 1, wherein the processing system is configured to adjust the noise signal by performing a modulation of an amplitude of the noise signal.

6. The sound enrichment system according to claim 5, wherein the processing system is configured to perform the modulation at a rate that is slower than a rate of an amplitude variation inherent in the noise signal.

7. The sound enrichment system according to claim 1, wherein the processing system is configured to adjust the noise signal by performing a modulation of selected spectral characteristics of the noise signal.

8. The sound enrichment system according to claim 7, wherein the processing system is configured to perform the modulation at a rate that is slower than a rate of a variation of the selected spectral characteristics inherent in the noise signal.

The sound enrichment system according to claim 7, further comprising a spectral shaping filter for at least in part filtering the noise signal, wherein the modulation of the selected spectral characteristics of the noise signal comprises a modulation of a frequency response of the spectral shaping filter.

The sound enrichment system according to claim 9, wherein the modulation of the frequency response of the spectral shaping filter comprises a modulation of at least one parameter selected from the group consisting of a Stop-band frequency, a slope, number of poles and zeroes, and location of poles and zeroes.

11. The sound enrichment system according to claim 1, wherein the noise generator, the environment classifier, the processing system, and the output transducer are parts of a hearing aid.

12. The sound enrichment system according to claim 11, wherein the hearing aid is configured for use by an ear of the user.

13. The sound enrichment system according to claim 11, wherein the hearing aid comprises a volume control that has a first mode of operation in which the volume control is operable to control a noise signal level, and a second mode of operation in which the volume control is operable to control a hearing aid gain.

14. The sound enrichment system according to claim 13, further comprising a switch for allowing the user to switch between the first and second modes of operations.

15. The sound enrichment system according to claim 13, wherein the volume control is capable of being switched between the first and second modes of operation based at least in part on the classification of the ambient sound environment.

16. The sound enrichment system according to claim 13, wherein the volume control is capable of being switched automatically between the first and second modes of operation.

17. The sound enrichment system according to claim 1, wherein the processing system is configured to adjust the noise signal based at least in part on whether or not speech is present in the ambient sound environment.

18. The sound enrichment system of claim 1, wherein the environment classifier comprises a speech detector.

19. The sound enrichment system of claim 1, wherein the processing system is a part of the noise generator.

20. The sound enrichment system of claim 1, wherein the processing system comprises a modulator that is coupled to the environment classifier.

21. The sound enrichment system of claim 20, wherein the processing system further comprises a multiplier coupled to the modulator.

22. The sound enrichment system of claim 20, wherein the processing system further comprises a spectral shaping filter coupled to the modulator.

23. The sound enrichment system of claim 22, further comprising a multiplier, wherein the modulator is coupled to both the multiplier and the spectral shaping filter.

The sound enrichment system of claim 1, wherein the noise generator, the environment classifier, the processing system, and the output transducer are parts of a first hearing aid, and wherein the sound enrichment system further comprises an additional noise generator, an additional environment classifier, an additional processing system, and an additional output transducer that form parts of a second hearing aid.

25. The sound enrichment system of claim 24, wherein the first and second hearing aid are operatively connected to each other, and wherein the processing system in the first hearing aid and the additional processing system in the second hearing aid are configured to operate with each other in a coordinated manner.

26. The sound enrichment system of claim 1, wherein at least a part of the noise generator and at least a part of the environment classifier is implemented using software program.

27. The sound enrichment system of claim 1, wherein the processing system comprises a signal level adjustor.

28. The sound enrichment system of claim 1, wherein the processing system comprises a receiver response equalization filter.

29. The sound enrichment system of claim 1, wherein the environment classifier is a part of the processing system.

30. The sound enrichment system of claim 1, wherein the output signal is the noise signal.

31. The sound enrichment system of claim 1, wherein the output signal is used to obtain the noise signal.

32. A method of providing a noise enriched sound signal for provision of relief of tinnitus, the method comprising:

obtaining a noise signal;

classifying a sound environment based on one of a number of pre-determined sound classes that classify different types of environments;

adjusting the noise signal to an adjusted noise signal based at least in part on said classifying, and outputting the adjusted noise signal;

generating an acoustic noise signal from the adjusted noise signal; and

presenting the acoustic noise signal to a tinnitus suffering person, the acoustic noise signal being a noise enriched sound signal for providing tinnitus relief.
