Circular stapling instruments with secondary cutting arrangements and methods of using same
First Claim
1. A surgical instrument comprising:
- an elongated shaft defining a central axis and having a distal end portion configured to operably support a circular staple cartridge therein;
a tissue acquisition shaft rotatably supported within said elongated shaft and having a distal portion that protrudes distally beyond the distal end portion of the elongated shaft;
at least two tissue acquisition members pivotally attached to said distal portion of the tissue acquisition shaft such that said tissue acquisition members are selectively simultaneously pivotable from a retracted position to deployed positions upon application of a deployment motion thereto;
a rotatable cutting member operably supported adjacent to said tissue acquisition members; and
a rotary actuator operably interfacing with said rotatable cutting member such that the rotatable cutting member is selectively rotatable about the central axis upon application of a cutting actuation motion to said rotary actuator.

Abstract
Surgical instruments are disclosed. Various non-limiting embodiments may include an elongated shaft that has a distal end portion that is configured to operably support a circular staple cartridge therein. A tissue acquisition shaft may be rotatably supported within said elongated shaft and have a distal portion that protrudes distally beyond the distal end portion of the elongated shaft. At least one tissue acquisition member may be pivotally attached to the distal end portion of the tissue acquisition shaft such that the tissue acquisition members are selectively pivotable from a retracted position to deployed positions upon application of a deployment motion thereto. A rotatable cutting member may be operably supported adjacent to the tissue acquisition member and being selectively rotatable about the central axis upon application of a cutting actuation motion thereto.

11. A surgical instrument comprising:
-
a handle assembly; an elongated shaft protruding from said handle assembly and defining a central axis, said elongated shaft terminating in a stapler head comprising; a circular staple cartridge having a fastener face; and an axially movable cutting member; a firing member operably supported in said elongated shaft and oriented to apply a firing motion to said circular staple cartridge; an anvil shaft assembly operably supported within said elongated shaft and configured to receive actuation motions from said handle assembly to cause said anvil shaft assembly to move axially within said elongated shaft such that a distal connection portion thereof moves axially relative to said fastener face; an anvil removably attachable to said distal connection portion of said anvil shaft assembly; a tissue acquisition shaft rotatably supported within said elongated shaft; a plurality of tissue acquisition members pivotally attached to a distal end portion of the tissue acquisition shaft and being selectively pivotable between a retracted position to deployed positions upon application of a deployment motion thereto; and a rotatable cutting member operably supported adjacent to said tissue acquisition members and being selectively rotatable about the central axis upon application of a cutting actuation motion thereto. - View Dependent Claims (12)
